Hi Folks

Well as the title says, im looking at getting an S4 Cab for my next car. Its still a good 5/6 months away, but im starting to put the feelers out, swat up on the car and all that.

Was wondering if anyone on here had made the change between the two, and what you thought?

Cheers folks :)

The B7 Cab is a cracking car, I've run my 3.2 for over 2 years and cant fault it but I really wouldn't go for an S4 as the bottom is falling out of the prices big time. Even mine has been affected by the tax/fuel costs. I'd go for the 2.0T or maybe even hang on for an A5 CAB. Its being previewed in September with orders taken Dec/Jan 09.

I'll probably be selling mine around September, not made the same change as you - but by far the S4 is the best car I've owned.

I dont get that depreciation is killing these cars, Autotrader and Audi prices seem to be strong. If you are part exing then I'm sure a dealer will use that as an excuse to offer low - but you dont buy a 4.2 if your worried about tax/petrol. I'm achieving 18.7 mpg avg around the city and upwards of 25mpg on motorways.

People who can afford 30k / 40k / 50k on a car are not going to worry about tax - I've got to renew mine at the en of the month £440. Yeah it's annoying but it wont make me sell it or stop me buying another.

Anyway back to the S4, sound is gorgeous, tip is great fun and very very fast with the addition of quattro for stability/security.

I had a 3.0 Q sline cab before this - it was great but the S4 is a different league!

It's all relative; My A3 2.0TDi did 47mpg but Diesel is now an average of 17p a litre more than Petrol AND my R32 only needs 95RON fuel. I also cover 5000 miles less than I used to so if anything I'm actually the same/better off financially owning the R32 as mad as it sounds (!!) I'm also getting 27-28mpg which is more than I ever bargained for! People here the words V6/V8 and assume they are only capable of 10-15mpg but modern V6/V8 engines are easily capable of 25-30mpg as an average.

I looked at an S4 Avant before the R32 and it was a great car. So the Cabriolet is much the same except you can here the engine even more when the roof is down  Expect to loose 2-3mpg off your R32's MPG figure.

Agreed - I'm not into wasting money, but would the relatively little extra (over the course of a year) stop me from having the car I wanted or more to the matter sell the car I already have?

I think the gvmt are out of order, I do 8k miles a year thus poluting the environment a lot less than my mrs in her 1.6 A3 who does 20k a year!

Im along with leon on this one, Yeh it sucks an extra £200 on tax, but thats what were buying into, a V8 40k + Car. Admitably it will be 2nd hand, so im looking more around the 25k. but £200 a year. £20 a month... Ill take that

The depreciation is a worry, but hopefully in 6/7 months the hit from the new model will of already been taken.

The cars going to be 100% leaisure with a few long journeys thrown in, so once again, MPG is no beef.

Cupra i wouldnt say its a waste of money, its an increase in price that allows you to own an S4, id take the increase to own that car anyday. Id say my 500 pints down the pub so far this year is a larger waste. ;).. lol

The S4 Cab is still sitting proudly at the top of my Next Car list, but we do have Caymans, S5s & Rs4s all josteling for top postion.. lol

Cheers for the comments folks..

Anyone got any comments on the performance difference?

Owning an Audi Cab is a great experience whichever version you choose, they just represent such a solid decent drive - maybe not the best out there these days but certainly very good. Whenever I've sold one (I'm on my 3rd) I always miss it.

The gurgly 4.2 V8 is a beautiful engine in both S and RS forms and a delight to hear - especially in a softtop.

I think a few of us would gently and respectfully suggest that your should test drive a ultra grunty 3.0TDI cab and understand that in the real world they are plenty quick enough. They are all Quattro, handle/stop well and make a lovely snarling noise under hard acceleration and are even capable of good fuel economy - two 200 mile trips along the A14 this week have returned a true 38mpg at the pumps (45 mpg on the DIS).

There are quite a few high-spec cars that are ex-demo (i.e. my current car and previous) and thus are often fully loaded with the same level of kit as an S4....so whilst depreciation and running costs aren't major issues for you when you can have the same amount of fun....
