Leaking Coolant

Evening,

After a total of about 4 weeks trouble free motoring my '98 S8 has started loosing coolant again.

I had a quick nosey under the bonnet this evening, couldnt see anything blindingly obvious so I did "daves patented pressure test" of the system (lips over expansion tank cap and blow like a bastard! :) ) amazingly I seem to have found the rough area of the leak!!

Seems to be coming from the somewhere on the drivers side, under the airbox, or behind the engine.

I'm guessing just a perished pipe, question is whats down there and how accesible is it?

Thanks!

Dave

p.s off to brush my teeth again, cant get rid of the taste of coolant bleugh....

The only coolant down there that I can think of is:

  1. Coolant pipe, rear
  2. From heating-system heat exchanger
    • With bleeder valve

[*]To heating-system heat exchange With bleeder valve

[*]Return hose

[*]Cap for expansion tank

  • Checking => Page 19-15

[*]Expansion tank

[*]Filler hose

[*]Thermostat

  • Replacing =>Page 19-8
  • Start of opening approx. 87°
  • End of opening approx. 102°
  • Opening stroke approx. 8 mm

[*]Radiator

[*]Bracket for coolant hoses

[*]Coolant pipe

  • Connection between oil cooler and engine block

[*]Oil cooler

[*]Coolant pipe

[*]Coolant pipe to oil cooler

So it could be around the oil cooler. You may (but I doubt it) have a high capacity alternator fitted. They were water cooled with a take off from the water pump.

Just a quick question, how much coolant have you lost and over what period of time and finally was the engine hot or cold when you noticed it?

Its got worse over the last 2-3 weeks, first time I noticed was a litre over 400 odd miles, I just topped it up and didnt think any more about it.

Really got bad yesterday, a litre over about 5 miles of town driving so pretty rapid.

The fact I was able blow water out of the system with my feeble lungs suggests (I think) that its pretty bad! :)

I have a feeling the car is going to be on its "last warning" after I get this fixed! It was supposed to be bargain luxury but has cost me quite a bit in repairs so far (hence why I'll be doing this myself). I love the car to bits but its getting a little frustrating, any more nonsense and it'll be getting a john-cleese style thrashing, either that or chopped in for a Mustang!

Good grief, what a game that was! tried from the bottom and from the top and couldnt see where it was leaking from.

Oddly the leak seems to have slowed down now.

Bored of messing around with it now, I've just booked the car in at Fontains, I understand they are very highly regarded on here!
