a8a6rs2
well answering to myself here, yes the fuel gauge MUST be removed beforehand. the pump assembly won't come out any other way and it's a PITA to undo it after having undone the main assembly. Ska
Yes and its more of a PIA putting it back together to ensure the seal is right or you'll get the "1/3 tank full but its run out of fuel!" senario.
a8a6rs2
so how exactly do I dissasemble the part that I got out to get to the pump itself? those plastic clips seem to point to a turn before lifting up and the seem too fragile to force that turn. should I dip it in a bucket with petrol and give some voltage to make sure it's dead? (any dangers?) sorry for the newbie qs.

sloss
Seems OK to me. Were it's connections A-OK - a bad earth return is always a good place to start looking. Stew,

Ska
As IT_S8 said it may be on its way out so doesn't work properly under load. Also are there any signs of wear and tear on the whole unit. The poblem I had was that there is a pipe on the unit that had sprung a leak so was drawing in air and no fuel. How much is a replacement pump from A8parts? I know from the stealer it was around £500!!! but direct from Siemens it was about £140. Oh video link don't work for me - just comes up with some garble text.

Ska
I read a thread on audiworld.com a while ago and the fella was saying that it had to go back in at a wierd angle and then twisted as it went down IIRC.
a8a6rs2
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeaaah! yes in your face german engineering :punched::openfire::openfire: after 12 hours over 5 days I got the stupid thing in, and the car works fine! don't know if I got the 1/3 full tank cutoff thingy right or not but it stays in! for anyone crazy enough to go digging when you try to install have plenty of light. spend time to examine the interior of the tank to get a good idea of what is where.definitely check the elsa procedure. when getting the biggest part in, after landing the pump's bulge in it's place it needs some force to make the turn:ffs:

Ska
I remember from my own experiences and from others how time consuming these components are espacially for the first time. Truely awsome fella weldone! Might think about sticking this procedure and some other common fault ones as a sticky.
a8a6rs2
happy to report that I probably got the 1/3 thingy right after all I let the fuel level drop until redline (even gave me a warning on the instrument cluster) and no cut off, so I assume success. sloss
I'm probably missing summat here - But what did you actually fix? I've read and re-read the thread and it seems you took it out and (eventually) put it back in! LOL
a8a6rs2
that is correct don't know what was wrong, but it was definitely sth between the fuel pump and the fuel filter. I also gave the pump some gas bucket bath, check my video, and after no more than 2-3 minutes working time I could see dirt or debris of some sort at the bottom of the bucket. actually to be more clear this thread is about two problems concerning the car being unable to start. the first was that it wouldn't crank and that was a loose connection from the starter to the battery supply line (earlier photo) and although I fixed that, the gas problem appeared straight afterwards. since this has turned into my personal support thread I would like your opinion on a OBD reading I noticed when the car isn't running and I connect the vag com cable and select OBD I can see that pressing fully on the gas pedal gives me 80% max reading. is this normal (with the dual stage and all) or I should look into it? Ska
These fuel pumps are known to just stop working for bit then when tampered with work just fine.
