Losing power and idling problems with my Audi A3

Hi

This is my first post as I have only just stumbled accross it while looking for common problems with Audi a3's

I have been having loads of problems with my Audi a3 and was at a garage round the corner from me for 3 days last week where they did a diognostics test and changed the mass air flow sensor and the pipe that attaches to where the sensor is (sorry not sure what this is called).

The car is an R reg Audi A3 has 100,000 miles on it and is a 1.6 petrol.

The problems I am having is that when I have been driving for a few miles and the temp gets to halfway it all of a sudden loses power and becomes very slugish, to the point where it is actually dangerous as at junctions it pulls off very slowly and then very slowly starts speeding up (Its like it takes a while tio catch up with itself) it also sporadically stalls and then will take ages to start up again. It also sporadically starts idling at 4-5000rpm's which is a little concerning and it all seems to happen when the car has been running for a while and is warm.

After the garage fitted the above the losing power seems to have got better but still revs high sometimes and is abit lumpy (almost feels like the accelerator pedal is juddering) but to be honest im not sure if the reason it has stopped losing power is because the weathers not as hot.

Has anyone had similar problems in the past?

In which case, you'll need to 'carrot test' your viscous fan.

When your car is up to temp, the viscous fan will be blowing. Stick a carrot into the blades (SLOWLY). Hold it tight, and if the carrot stops the fan, the fan is knacked. If the fan eats the carrot, then it might be your thermostat/electric fans.

Does your car have air con? With the aircon on in this weather, another electric fan should kick in. Does this happen?

Also, check your throttle cable - does it move freely all the way? When warm, does the cable move freely or does it stick anywhere?

Clutch wear? Is the clutch and gear change OK?

Just some basics to check and eliminate.

If your throttle is electronically controlled, try checking the throttle body. The inside maybe coated with hardened oil causing it to stick shut causing idling problems and the loss of power when pulling away that you spoke of. (I had same problem).

If your throttle is cable controlled, you should feel the pedel stick also but with electronic control you won't feel it because it's uses a servo system to control the position of the throttle valve.

Overheating and fan problem could be a seperate issue but you seem to have had some good suggestions about that. Good luck

Hi Marc,

I've been having the same problem with my audi for quite some time now. I live in Arizona where the heat is quite extreme. I started experiencing this last summer and took it into the dealer. They told me the computer was simply reading a loss of power and changed my battery. The problem still persisted. When the winter season came the problem stopped. However, I've noticed that when the temperature reaches above 89 degrees or so and I drive it for more than 30 mins or so I begin to see the same symptoms. It feels like it wants to stall. I push on the gas and I get a delayed reaction. At intersections it goes then it delays and then the power kicks in again. I have a feeing I am experiencing the same thing you are.

I took it in again and they told me that I may need to replace the turbo. I hope not. What did you do to resolve the issue? I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks.

Just incase anyone has the same problems it was actually the cam shaft sensor that was at fault and it is now fixed.

Where abouts is the cam shaft position sensor on the engine? My friend connected my car up to the diagnostics and the problem turned out to be this sensor. Any ideas if it is hard to change?
