Audi S8 overheating problems

Hiya Can you help, went to newcastle friday car temp went to about 100 fan kicked in and it stableized at 100. came back the same... so al good i thought, went to Wales saturday the same temp went to 100 fan kicked in then car stablized same on the way back.... any way was driving local yesterday (shopping) and temp went right up tp 120 then the warning light came on. have spoke to Audi they said could be thermastat or water pump, how can i tell which it is. :confused: any off your help is appricated. guy at audi said last guy with Audi A8 had overheating problem and he had t'stat, rad, water pump and cos the front had to come off had the cam belt done as well... £1700.00 lots of money ......

He is right in getting the pump and thermostat done in one go as the whole front end of the car will need to comes off. As for the price I'm sure you can get it done much cheaper by a competent indipendent (have seen of quotes of around £800 on here). While your at it you may as well change the timiming belt as well seeing as that has to come off to remove the pump and thermostat. Oh and normaly the engine temp is around the 90 mark not 100 so change the lot and check the viscous fan as well.

Hi, Welcome as per my post below. :)

It could well be as the Audi main dealer has said. How many miles has the S8 done and what year is it?

The Cambelt should be done at every 80k and at the same time as most people on here have the Waterpump and thermostat are aslo changed as a precaution.

I 'think' it is possible to cjange just the thermostat. I'll see if I can find the process. If it can be done I would change that first. If it ain't that then its either your waterpump or something more serious..... :(

Shows the thermostat housing with the covers still on. I am under the bonnet of mine this afternoon, I'll have a look. Taking apart the whoile front end to change the thermostat is not cleaver design!

Yes V6's have much more room in front of the engine than the V8's so the front end stays on to do a cam belt change, but I do recall (albeit vaguely) that the thermostat housing on the V6’s was obscured by something like the timing belt or pulley. But it makes sense to change the thermostat as Mike says and seeing if the problem is resolved then move onto the water pump.

If it's a pre-facelift, (no fogs on the bumper), then it's a timing belt off job to replace the thermostat as it's in the way. If you need to get the belot off, then it costs buttons more to do all the other stuff in there (belt, tensioners, pump, etc).

I'd say £1700 is taking the mick, £800-£1000 is a more normal dealer price, some of the independents will do it for less, though be careful where you go, V8's can go very expensively wrong.

Also.. Have you checked the coolant? It should be a funny pink colour (special Audi stuff), also, try it without the Aircon on, the compressor can generate quite a bit of heat when it goes wrong.

I did Botangs thermostat (ABZ 4.2 32v) just removed the top hose, disconnected the lower rad hose and you can get into change it no problem. Took about 45min start to finish.

I did the thermostat on mine and its a doddle to do in place. Somewhere if you search on here you'll find my how to guide....(with pics)

Damn... Have you done any trime trials on that Tobes? How does it compare to standard? Who knows if its big difference I might get rid of my spare wheel and go on a slim fast diet and wash the car more often to reduce skin friction drag:grin:

Have to agree with the diagnosis, the 32v V8 thermostat is in a from the 40v thermostat. Also, the 40v thermostat is a weak point apparently.

Once the front comes off, you might as well change the belt, pump and thermostat.

However, first of all, I think you need to do the 'carrot' test on the viscous fan. See if the viscous fan is up for the job.

Warm up, have the viscous fan 'fanning' and slowly stick a carrot in. If the fan stops, your fan coupling is knacked. If you get carrot slices, then the fan is fine!

Wash it? Current thinking is to make the surface rough (same as thhey do for the olympic rowboats these days) so as to reduce the barrier effect of the air flowing over the surface (skin friction drag)... Time to get out the rough sand paper......

And Tobes... there must be at least a mile or two of wires you can still strip out of that thing!!!

No way!? I see.. one piece of diagnostic software for most jobs and 'VEGcom' for the rest.

Does that work with all veg? are there different vegetables that indicate different failures? If I stick a courgette up the exhaust for instance it it stalls, is my engine shagged?

Not with a courgette, but if you stick sprouts into the inlet and it stalls its well and truly cabbaged.... ;-)

We have only been drag racing in it so far, We ran the track one against Botangs, At GTI international with a major headwind

Track one: Stock (junk removed)

0-60: 5.78

1/4: 14.4

Botangs: (air filter and exhaust)

0-60: 7.83

1/4: 15.96

We have all most finished getting the car ready for a test session, Just got to lower the front and get some new tyres. looking at Audi driver in October
