scooby_simon
Need to find some forum software for the class of boat I sail. We do not have much dosh to spend, otherwise we would use vB. What we need is: Forum with access control, so we can control who gets in there. Access control tied to our Joomla web software (ideally) User profiles for the users Threading E-mail function, so members can subscribe to discussions instead of visiting the forum Uploads Subforums (Ideally) PM options Polling function Moderation functions
burble
phpBB and YaBB spring to mind. phpBB seems to quite often have security holes but I remember the YaBB forum I used to admin (before migrating it to vBulletin) being a pain in the arse when something went wrong because it was flat file based rather than database based. Pumazooma
phpBB seems to quite often have security holes Very common misconception actually. The current versions of phpBB2 and 3 do not have any known exploits. 2x has had only one very minor exploit in the last 2-3 years and 3x got a paid security check during its development and hasn't had any issues of note in the year since it came out. When they are found they're fixed and updates released within days, sometimes hours. Most hacked boards come from people running very out of date software or in fact it's a host server exploit such as a well know cpanel bug which allows hackers to change every index file on the server very easily. I would have no hesitation in using phpBB, and I do on 4 boards.

Ritey
phpBB2 was, towards the end of it's life, a haven for bot software, not so much board takeover / hacks. phpBB3 which I've only spent a small amount of time with seems to have improved significantly and offers a decent amount of features / mods especially when you consider it's a free product
Pumazooma
Yeah the bots beat the captcha a while back. There's a 5 minute fix though which I haven't seen beaten in nearly 2 years.
