Microphone connection

I will be installing an OEM bluetooth kit in my '98 S8 shortly and having just had the interior light out I have noticed there is already a microphone in there. I wondered if anyone can tell me where it connects to as it may be easier than me having to run a new cable up there.

I've had a look at the info on Audi pages and it mentions a 25pin connector behind the CD changer, I don't remember seeing one of these on my car and I've had all the trim out in that area. Would a UK spec car have one of these connectors or are our cars different?

Eddy,

I had the same issue on mine. I jumped through all the hoops to retrofit my PDA with the in car fittings to find I don't havce the 25 pin DIN connector in the boot. When I get home I will post up a thread that has the pinouts from the radio that you may be able to direct wire to to allow use of existiong Mic, Speaker and Mute facility.

I'm pretty sure that won't work as the microphone won't be connected directly to the radio, it needs to go to the phone, it's the output from the phone that goes to the radio. The other functions would be wired to the radio anyway so picking them up there wouldn't make much difference.

Eddy,

Here is 3 links that help with connections in the S8. When I found I had no 25 pin din I put it on hold and never came back. However, if like me you have a Phone connection in the centre console at the rear than it must wire through to the Mic and radio. HTH.

Just been looking on elsawin and it looks like the controller on ours might be under the phone connection block at the back of the centre console.

Yes, it will be. We've never dismantled a pre face S8 with the phone kit, but I suspect it will be almost identical to the hard wired phone kits that came as standard on the early facelift cars.

If you remove the rear vents and the two side screws at the back of the center console and lift slightly, I suspect you will find the Phone control module stuffed under the left hand side of the center console.

It will be on the left hand side as the audio wiring loom runs down the left hand side of the transmission tunnel, and many of the phone connections are incorporated into the audio loom, eg audio mute, power etc.

The phone module should have a multiblock connector which I suspect will be easy enough to work out, based on colours of the wires and a bit of tracing.

Beware of the US stuff as the telematics / phone-home-in-a-crash type stuff was common over there, using the modules in the boot, with 25 pin connectors, but we never had it, and worst still but elsawin etc does a poor job of documenting the phones we did have....

I have the original nokia phone with the generation 1 cradle in a prefacelift car. As the cable from the cradle just plugs in to the console, I have wondered whether all the connections I would need are in this detachable cable connector. Has anyone connected a new phone or bluetooth this way? Is the wiring for this connector documented anywhere? It would seem a nice way to add new kit that could also be taken out, but I don't know anything about car kits and maybe this is not the way to go. Any advice appreciated!

Found it in the centre tunnel as suspected. Difficult to get to and doesn't have all the connections. It must have a seperate speaker somewhere as it only has a mute connection to the HU.

I seem to remember the speakers as being in the door pillars behind the driver and passenger's heads Eddy , theres a small grille in each as the locator?

Speaker is standalone at the bottom of the B pillar, drivers side. It is the same one used for the in built navigation. It was done like this up until about 2001 where the phone and Nav became integrated with the regular audi speakers, which is a far better design... +++
