waynester2
Hey Guys, As it starting to get colder, I am noticing the start-up first thing in the morning is getting noisier, sometimes its perfect but sometimes it sounds like theres ball bearings rattling around, but only for the initial rev once its fires (I guess controlled by the ECU as foot not on the throttle when it does it). Engine is V8 4.2 code AUW I used to get something similar with a 1.8t A6 I had, and that was due to hydraulic tappets not been energised enough during start, due to the pressure taking a second to come up.(but it was only 1 in 10 starts) Does the V8 suffer this as well? is it doing any damage? as soon as its started there is no problem, its only on the computer controlled initial surge, would an oil change help? Be interested in any comments on this. Thanks W
Ska
When's the last time it was changed? It couldn't hurt to change it infact it'll proly fix it. Choose a suitable grade for the coming months
waynester2
Thanks for the reply Ska, to be honest I think it is coming up for being due, it was changed last october, and i'm on standard service intervals (not longlife as the car was originally) didn't know this would affect the start up though, I guess the oil is not as thin as it was.... Oli18
I have and i have had that same explanation given to me...it's a funny tapping noise for about 2 seconds that makes you start getting paranoid but i've had my car for almost 1 1/2 years and it's absolutely fine! Ska
I've had it once but changing the oil sorted it.
Oli18
Hi Ska, can i ask whether it was just an oil change or did you also change the viscocity when you changed? If so, what do you use? Thanks, Oli
Ska
Hey Oli 10/ 40 magnatec; though I have been told this has a high ash content so will change to something else like sunflower cooking oil as a mate's mum did once!
Architex mA8tey
Hey Oli10/ 40 magnatec; though I have been told this has a high ash content so will change to something else like sunflower cooking oil as a mate's mum did once! Thats a coincidence ska, my mothers cooking oil has a high ash content due to her flicking her cigarettes around as she cooks . . . ahem
waynester2
Had first frost this morning of the autumn, went to start her up, start up noise really bad, I think it would have been quieter if I had started it without any oil in it! I know everything points to this being a known problem, but it sounds bloody rough!!!!
spitanddirt
You guys aren't the only ones who have experienced it. I just bought my A8 and the first time I heard it, I thought I had a connecting rod bearing shell out! Whoever posted that tech bulletin, thank you so much. I thought I was about to lose my mind with that noise. And for me, it does it when it's cold and the car has sat overnight. First start of the day, it's guaranteed to knock. Nollywood
I had the same issue as the weather got colder, I now change my oil and filter every three thousand miles. Haven't heard the start-up rattle in a while now.
