Rustynuts
We bought a couple of cheapish standalone players from Comet a couple of years ago for the kids in the car. They take them with them whenever we go anywhere that warrants in car entertainment. They were about £60 apiece as I remember, but have come down since then I suspect. The benefit of these type over the full plumbed in units is that you take 'em out when you're done and they aren't on show to be nicked.
shao_khan
Yeah we got some cheapies as well - £89 from Toys R us a couple of years back - worked very well, but no battery / mains option which woul dbe usefull for us, we go away a fair bit in the car, and for those times you're unpacking the car, etc just to keep them out of the way for 10 mins extra. I saw an add the other day for a company that makes headrests with screens built in, so you just buy the new headrest and run power to it - so you can keep your stock stuff if you sell up. Rustynuts
Ours have mains adapters, car 12v adapters, and also a battery pack for complete portability. They play all back up discs aswell. If we go away anywhere and stay in a hotel then they have the capability of connecting to the Hotel TV with either AV cable or a scart adapter. They have headphone sockets and headphones so that the 2 kids can watch different films without interference, and we can listen to the radio in the front of the car aswell. And they come in a fancy litle holdall with everything tucked away too. Money well spent I think.
