skifly
Now that I am firmly ensconced in the delightful NZ now I am looking to buy a new car. After some guidance from Mort (cheers bud), I have been looking at something like a legacy, then happened upon a blue MkIII GTI (memories!) in the lot of a car place and instantly took a shine to it... kind of harks back to my laser blue MkV i sold about 18 months ago! What makes it worse is that my girlfriend absolutely loved my last GTI and loves this car too. But I have a query... firstly is there an easy way to tell the mileage on the car - its clock shows 69,000k which is about 43k miles - which seems low for a 1999 car. It is up for $10k NZD which is around £4k. Couple of reasons I ask are that it seems a fair bit of electronic gadgetry was added in Japan (its an import) but for a very low mileage car I wouldnt have thought it was worth it. Then the drivers mat is heavily worn under the drivers foot. Probably more than I would expect for a car of that mileage, however i have been told (by someone else) that Japanese cars are often slightly more worn due to traffic being heavier and more foot movement. Finally the clutch box is creaking and feels a little soft (then again I have come from a boxster!). So does anyone have any thoughts and here is the linky to the car: Used Cars and Japanese Imports in New Zealand - Ted Traceys LMVD MVTR Opinions welcome! Cheers - Chris BTW - the porka is still for sale if anyone wants a new toy! And if anyone sharks this one from me I will be round...!
shark_90
That's a MkIV mate! And yes, I'm afraid these are really, really easy to clock. If you have any thoughts at all about it's mileage, I'd be walking away. Just to give you an idea, this $60 cable will do it: vagtool vag-com keyless bmw carsoft Steer clear mate, and find another car IMO.
Mort
I'd find out what they mean by certified mileage and have a test drive - at the end of the day its a 4 grand Gti - it might be a good deal - it might not... if it walks like a duck etc... skifly
Fecker... oh and i did realise it was a Mk4 but brain must have been elsewhere. Have been back and reckon the cars clocked. Last service was too long ago and mileage hasnt changed much plus the items mentioned before. Last night though I managed to bag a silver gti with a few k more on the clock for exactly the same price so am a happy boy. Just have to head over and pick it up with a cheque next week. Getting it from a welsh guy that has been here since 81' and has really looked after the car. Does anyone also know where the service schedules can be found for a Mk4 GTI on t'interweb? BTW - did you ever manage to get rid of the girly "I cant park" wheels on your car and get some 18's? So are we going to let this traitor back in the fold? :grin:Welcome back (in advance) mate
