jamieg
Hi can anyone help me with my A3 1.8T Quattro that has the following issues. My car is bouncing around when idling, it's not bouncing much but the needle is moving up & down & I can feel a judder in the car, this is whilst sitting still. When driving along normally if I'm stopping I put the clutch down and the rev's drop to 500 then quickly go back to slightly over 700 again, just over 700rpm is normal, this is also the case if I start the car when it's warm, when cold it's ok but I guess thats the auto choke. When pulling away or going through the gears I get and very flat spot around 2300 - 2700 rpm you get a judder and it picks up again but with less power than normal and it does not feel fluent or smooth. When accelerating hard up hill or flat the power hesitates at around 4000 rpm then after around 2 seconds it kicks in again. When I change gear I dip the clutch and the car jolts, it's not a smooth as it was, seems very jerky - especially pulling away. I do hear a slight rushing of air sound coming from the engine bay, I think from the drivers side but I can't see anything obvious or hear anything with the bonet up, this noise can't be heard when the car is not moving, it only appears whilst the car is accelerating. Very poor MPG's, normally I get 32mpg but getting around 26mpg's seems to be peeing fuel, not a cheep habit just now . I've tried the following to remedy the issues Changed MAF sensor Changed Spark Plugs Changed Air Filter Cleaned Throttle Body Housing + reset ECU Oil was low so I've topped up again as this A3 is one of the oil guzzlers CTS Coil Packs After doing the MAF and plugs this did improve the hesitation. I've measured blocks 002 and 032 on VAG-COM details below. shark_90
Hi Sounds very much like an air leak to me. It's not a 5 minute job but go round EVERY boost and vacuum hose and check for leaks or splits. They may not be obvious so inspect thoroughly. Best of luck
jamieg
Yeah I've had a check around for around 30 mins looking over each joint and giving it a gentle tug but no movement or visual signs of pipe damage. I heard of some other method of spraying water / ether, or starter spray around the engine bay etc whilst the engine is running and when you spray close to the area the engine rev's will change badly etc...... Jo308
Possible that the diverter valve membrane has split?
jamieg
I've got a DV on order as they arn't a stock item at my local audi stealer so will have to wait until tuesday for that. I've read loads of things about when the DV goes it makes a fluttering sound when you lift off the gas but no such noises here but at under £40 its worth a change. I've also checked all pipes again but really can't find any splits etc so will have to change the DV over and book into somewhere to get this air leak looked into. Anyone know if the spraying around the engine is a good move or not?
ants3
Long shot I know but have you changed the temp sensor? They can make ya car behave like its got issues. As far as I know, the old ones where taken out of stock as they were pants. I think the updated version should have a green band on it.
jamieg
Cheers ants - yeah changed the CTS "sorry coolant temp sensor" for a new green one already mate. Edited October 27, 2008 by jamieg
ants3
Ah,sorry fella. Didnt pick up on that. The spraying of water over pipes to see if there is a leak is a good one. Old school mechniac mate of mine did this with me mk1 golf gti with a spray bottle many moons ago. I know that its not really the same complex engine but it high lighted a leak(sucking air in thru one of the injector seats which made it run like tw@t). Although tempory,a bit of bathroom sealer did the trick. It was,of course, fixed properly later but did prove it was that. Apparently he was taught this by some old red indian geezer, who was taught by tribal leader, who was in turn, told by some bloke down the pub. I have seen it work, it aint an old wives tale. However,I wouldnt use any kind of wd40,engine starter, lynx for men or any kind of arsonist propellent. As you need the engine hot before it starts having a mare, the exhaust will be red hot. If ya car is insured 3rd party fire and thieft, this could be one way of solving the problem I suppose....
jamieg
Changed the DV "dump / diverter valve" now car seems so so much smoother without the hesitation which is fab, the old DV was a 710N, the replacement was also a 710N, didn't seem to be an issue with the old one however the car disagrees with this and is running good however I've one small issue, when I dip the clutch to change gear or stop the revs seem to go down to 500 then straight away shoot back to 750/800 any further ideas? 1animal1
Was going to suggest the TIP collapsing which is common on remapped 1.8T's and kinda has similar symptoms...... you can test the DV yourself by placing your thumb over the small top hole after pushing in the piston from the bottom.....if you release the piston when your fingers over the top hole and the piston drops to its starting point....the DV's fecked

I've now also changed the manifold gasket too but still no joy on this one. Anyone know of a decent repair garage with a rolling road so this can be really looked into or any thoughts? - problem on the car does not appear to be there when just rev'ing it requires the car to be moving, still getting a rush of air noise when pulling away and up hills and throughout most accelerating.
