Hi all

Just had my car back from the bodyshop after having the side resprayed the clour match is perfect as previously it was the wrong shade of metallic blue but when the sun shines on the new bodywork some of the paintwork looks cloudy, patchy!!! will this dissappear with time or will i need to use something aggresive to shift the cloudiness away, the car was placed in a n oven after the respray . When the car doesnt have sun shining directly on it the blue looks perfect uniform etc are there any recommended polishes paint cleaners that can be recommended or alternative suggestions?

thanks all

Hello!

Take it back! After a respray you should not apply any product that seals the surface of the paintwork other wise gases cannot escape and can cause the cloudyness you have seen. You wont believe how many bodyshops ship cars with a coat of wax on them....!

Factory paintwork is baked in an oven, though thats different to the oven your car went in unless they stripped the entire car of all plastics, rubber and anything non metal.

Either that or what you have is already the first sign of clearcoat failure, often this occurs in resprays. The clearcoat is applied to thickly, each paint is different but there is effectivly a thickness that it wont go and work. The clearcoat starts to out, you get cloudyness, in the sun you have what looks like swirls, very thing, scratches very close together also known as "crazing". Then it dusts, then its the end.

It is possible you have a little over spray on the area thats dried in an non regular way. To be honest if its just been done i would get back to the shop. Have it coloured sanded (atleast) and then resprayed.

You may even find that all those guys did when they "resprayed" it was in deed a cheapo sand down or remove the old paintwork. Often if you car goes in for respray of the same colour, they just sand down the clearcoat and some of colour (colour sanding) and then your they respray from the first bondable point.

When what you really need is a full wack sand down to the paintwork, through the primer. Multi-stage paintworks require paint that is compatible and bondable to each layer. IF they are not you can get these clouds. It seems like bodyshops and spray shops should know this, trust me....they dont!

My first port of call would be back to the shop to raise that issue. Maybe they polished and and left the paintwork all messed up, do you have a pic?

But if you play with it and cant fix it they might well point the finger at you!

Thanks for the response Geoff

Typical as it s raining now Sunday morning i want to have a look at the paintwork again so no sunshine, I will be taking it back to the bodyshop tomorrow as one of the workers said on Friday If you have any problems to bring it back ( customer is always right ) ahhaha

Also noticed some orange peel effect on the lower passenger door going slightly into the front wheel arch same orange peel effect or reaer quarter as well this shouldnt be too hard to rectify ? just want the car to look mint again strangely enough they did the bonnet as well and that is immaculate !!!!

By sandinf the clearcoat and rebuffing will that get rid of the cloudiness ?

thanks Geoff

Hi,

Hopefully the bodyshop will see the cloudyness as they have bright lights to allow them to see the paintwork!

Orange peel, is harder to correct as it often requires wet sanding then buffing. Its common in resprays and factory paintwork. I would be suprised if they just told you it was normal, and in honesty it probably is.

Hopefully they will know how to correct the couldyness but colour sanding it back and repainting should sort it!

Let us know how it works out!

Geoff
