[Audi A3/S3] 8L Facelift Stereo Upgrade. Chrous -> Concert II

Hi, I've just bought myself an audi A3 facelift model. It comes with a chorus stereo which is losing its paint from its buttons and who's 'fader' setting operates in exactly the same way as the 'balance' setting...

I was hoping that in order to fix these problems that I would be able to upgrade it to a concert II with CD and possibly even add a dice electronics iPod interface.

However, I have a couple of worries... I've heard that adding a concert II to cars without CANBUS causes the stereo to switch itself off after an hour and other such issues... How can I tell if my car has CANBUS? I hear CANBUS came in sometime in 2001 and my car was registered in January 2002 (Although a 51 plate).

Also, will any old concert II fit as it should, or should I be looking for a specific concert II... ?

Any help appreciated!

I looked into this a couple of weeks back. I beleive you should have can bus in a 2002. Yeah if you dont you will have to manually switchoff, and i beleve the lights wont dim with your lights etc. You can get a can emulator which is like £90 ive been told. Ive decided to go aftermarket becker or something.

But a way to check is to remove the power block from the back of the stereo, if you get the security code come up then its not canbus. As if it has canbus it only comes up if its plugged into another car i believe. Theres also a way to check on the wires coming out of the back.

Its on audisport forum (ice section) but the forum is down at the moment
