cabby
In the process of decorating  and want to replace/update switches and have the following questions: - Do I need a regular or inductive dimmer to control low voltage lights ? - What's the difference between a 2-way and an intermediate light switch and how do I know which one I need ? Ta very much.
hotdog
Electronic dimmers are best for LV lights, but check that the transformers are dimmable type! Most dimmers will work with LV units but those designed for LV transformers are usually clearly marked. Don't forget that they can only take a certain load, typically 250w for a multiple gang dimmer and 400w for a single ang (depending on manufacturer) Where are you getting your kit from? Regards to switches, two way units have three terminals and intermediate have four terminals. Just replace like for like. Intermediate are less common at DIY shops. cabby
Cheers. The sparky that fitted the lights new we would be keeping a dimmer and came highly recommended so I assume the lights he fitted are for us are dimmable. The single switches to be replaced control the same light (one a top and bottom of stairs) have three terminals so I assume these are the intermediate type. The place I am ordering from is below. The quality appears good and the style is what we are after + prices look very reasonable . hotdog
If there's three terminals, they are two way switches. Easily obtainable but make sure you buy 2 way! Don't buy an intermediate and assume you've got an extra terminal for spare use -they don't work like that! And when you swap them, make sure the cables go back in the correct terminals, otherwise you lights ain't gonna work!! Those switches look similar to Wandsworth kit. Good gear.
