Rattle woes!!

Hi guys,,

My car has developed the most annoying rattle, well virtually any rattle annoys me:(

This one seems to be coming from the drivers footwell area, when I stick my head into the area, I cannot determine if its coming from behind the back of centre console area of the dash or around the accelerator peddle. Either way its very deep in, it sounds like a tick, tick, tick noise, almost like some resonating in line with the engine noise and only on idle. As soon as the accelerator it touched, even very lightly, it stops.

Has anyone ever had rattles in this area?? I will probably get under it at the weekend to try and see if I can find any cables etc coming through the bulkhead into the engine area that could be rattling. Im reluctant to bring it back to the dealer as even I realise, to them it really is petty and I probably don’t want them removing the guts of the dash to find it, probably to introduce more rattles.

Cheers

Paul

hi guys

Thanks for the replies.

Initially i was getting slightly concerned it was the engine, but it seems to come and go, after almost getting my head stuck under the peddles, im pretty sure it is a rattle.

My first thoughts was that it was a stone as you say, and sure enough when i hit the plastic undershield theres loads of them in there, maybe wont do any harm to take them off and clear them out.

I checked the engine oil and couldn't believe how low it had dropped in about 5 weeks, although its been 5 weeks of really heavy town driving. It took 0.6 ltrs to fill and i assumed this was causing additional engine rattle and maybe it wasn't a rattle but the engine as you say, but no - still there, although i only idled it in the drive maybe improve after a run - fingers crossed, i really hate rattles:(

Cheers

Hey, I had a very annoying rattle in this area too a few months ago, it was driving me bonkers, couldn't figure out where it was coming from, it sounded like it was coming from behind the dash, somewhere in the driver's footwell area.

Eventually I popped off the fuse-box cover on the side of the dash which allows you see in behind the dash! After prodding around I discovered there was a loose nut/washer within finger-reaching distance. I tightened it up and hey presto, rattle was gone.!

Might be worth your while having a look there on your car. I suggested this fix to another guy and it also fixed it for him.

Hi Mate,

Cheers for that, ill give it a go. Is the panel your refering to, the one facing you when you open the drivers door and look into the car?

I did take the kickpanel on the bottom of the drivers side of the dash off, where the diagnostics port is and flippen heck, its just a mass of wiring looms and connectors, so i thought best to close it up again and leave well alone.

I'll have a look tomorrow, how does the panel come off, it it just poppers?

Cheers

Hi Paul,

Yep, its the panel on the side of the dash, on the drivers side, you see it when you open the door. It just snaps off easily if you put your fingers on the edge of it and give it a tug, don't worry about breaking any clips, its very simple, designed to come off easily to access the fuses.

Once off, you'll see the fuse panel, and quite a few silver nuts/washers which I think hold the dashboard onto the chassis (hard to describe without a photo). It was one of these little silver nuts which was loose on mine, it was rattling off its washer.

I had tried the panel underneath too, and yeah, I thought likewise! A mess of wires!!

EDIT, here's a couple of pics I found elsewhere, In the second pic below, the nut I'm talking about is just near his finger, or one very close to that.

Hi JoeGti,

Many thanks for taking the time and effort to post and to find and post pics. Unbelievable, exactly as you said, i've just checked, the same screw on mine was half way out with a nice big washer vibrating on the screw shaft.

hopefully this will be the rattle sorted, i sat with the engine ticking over and so far nothing - Brilliant and many thanks once again

Fantastic! Glad it sorted it for you, amazing, you are the 2nd person I've described this fix to, its obviously a common enough one.

Coincidentally, today I noticed on mine that my door seemed to be sticking out more than normal, near the mirror. On closer inspection I discovered that one of the nuts that holds the door skin on was completely undone! Unbelievable. It seems VW have trouble tightening nuts and bolts properly.

In all honesty rattles bug the life out of me but know what you mean, i have some which come and go. This one in particular really bugged me!! Normally turn the radio up although after driving with the back seats down on saturday picking up a christmas tree, the exhaust noise was fantastic, almost didn't want to put them up again.

Cheers
