steelwind101
Hello, The guide is pretty good, were you looking more specifically for what pad and which polish and how you know when its done? I presume you got the kit with 80 and 83? 80 is your lighter polish, if you mild swirling and marring from saying washing only, nothing serious this is your answer. It will fill some problems as well, its a good product. Apply this on the POLISHING PAD, the Megs polishes are quite oily, once polish the first panel you would only need a few "pea sized" drop on the pad to keep going. Spread the polish over a foot square area, and then knock up the machines speed to say 5. As the polish breaks down (does its job) it will start to turn clear, when it does this stop the polisher and buff off any residue. As for 83 use either on a polishing pad or a cutting pad, the bad thing is that i think most kits only come with 1x each pad. This poses a problem b/c you would need to clean dry the pads before switching products, some people recommend only product per pad. Be advised 83 will need to be followed by Meguiars 80 on polishing pad as it has quite aggressive abrasives that wont break down small enough to leave a perfect finish. Meguiars 83 on a cutting pad (i think there redish) is a pretty serious combo that will leave micro marring. If you have pics and tell me what paintwork you have i can advise you better on which combo you will need. I suspect if you have visable swirls under the sunlight and you have never polished a car before you would need Meguiars 83 on a polishing pad followed by 80 on a polishing pad. The finishing pad is good for applying NXT or similar machine compaitable non abrasvie product. I hope that helps. Geoff

Right, here goes, I have a dark red cutting pad, yellow polishing pad & buff finishing pad & megs 80 & 83. The car is an A4 in black metalic, which has, as you mention swirling & holograms in the sunlight form the 2 1/2 years of hand finishing. These I have lost/masked in the past with 3 stage megs, finishing with NXT. The car did have a panel re-sprayed at the dealers early last year, which was buffed up pretty bad, so I have one door with some serious swirling. Many thanks
steelwind101
Hi Pitch, The A4 paintwork can be quite tough, maybe a test of 83 on a polish pad to see what it comes up like. If you make little impact then step the pad up the heavier one, that has some serious cut though. If you dont get the defects removed at that points its likely they wont come out which is sometimes the case. Black is hard so you can see everything where has a silver will make a 90% good polishing job look 100%! The poor finish from the respray will be the hardest area to correct i expect, so start there. pitch3110
Well, I think you will get some idea by the pics. (first time I have uploaded so trust they are ok). The car is 32 months old & although I am fairly new to this detailing lark I have always taken care when cleaning. That said the paint is showing signs of two & half years of cleaning. The G220 is the muts & proved very easy to use, having said that it has taken me 30mins to do one door, which is the passenger side & showing signs of the odd hedge scratch, so is poss the worst panel on the car. I am happy with first attempt, but am sure with more practice I could gain a better result A few questions now that I have lost my DA polisher viginity. 1, Is it best to use the machine horizontal then virtical or use a circle motion. 2, When can you tell that the product is completely broken down. 3, I have finished with NXT. Is this ok to use with a machine. 4, How much preasure would you apply. Many thanks TT & Geoff for your assisatnce to date. Best Ones & ta Paul
steelwind101
Nice one! You pretty much have the polishing down and it was pretty swirled before. Its hard to tell from the pictures, does the finished panel look really glossy to you? If so then it has totally broken. 1) You can use the machine in any direction as long as its in a small enough area. for example i tend to move left to right on most panels. When i get to the lower sections i prefer to lay or knee and tend to move up and down. The head has its own random pattern so you all you need to do its keep it moving over the area. 2)In general the Meguiars polishes should go from the that beige colour to looking clear or invisible/thin layer of residue when they are broken down. 3) NXT is good for machine appilcation on a finishing pad. In general you dont have to work it very long, it should just take one or two passes. Then you can remove it or leave it until its applied to the whole car. 4) With the g220 i find you do not need much pressure as its acutally heavier the older polishers that were about. The only time i would press down is if say on a roof panel it vibrates alot. I use nothing more then contact pressure to keep the machine in good contact with the paintwork. You had the worst of black paint, now im sure your getting the best of it! Geoff
pitch3110
Cheers Geoff, After my last post, I did a badly swirled boot lid with a bit more attention & it has come up like a dream. Will crack on with the rest of the car tomorrow. A couple of other bits of info......what about cleaning the pads?? How often & what is best? Can I apply NXT with the machine on a regular basis, ie once a month? ta once again Paul
steelwind101
Hi Paul, You can apply NXT every month with the machine thats fine, if you start to notice the pads picking up some dirt or smearing any tar then i would stop. By machine NXT (Original version) has a bit of "cleaning action" and you would want to smear what it clears over the polished panels. YOu might see that happen, you might not. As for pads, you can but a dedicated pad cleaner in a spray from Pinnicle which i think is good but is over kill really unless you want to indulge. Just wash them out with hot water, put some washing up liquid on them and then wash that out really well and dry in a warm place. Over time the pads do expire and end up getting stained, they dont last forever but they should go on a for a while. Geoff

ahaydock
With my pads after a machine polish I tend to soak them in fairy liquid for a while then rinse with water until they run clear - noramlly does it. Every so often all my pads and cloths go in the machine on a low temp wash with no conditioner
