Sagging Xenons !

We have xenons on an 05 Cooper and just recently (last week) the lights have started to play up.

At start up they self level then very randomly whilst driving they both 'drop' and the visability drops to around 5m.

They sometimes correct themselves sometimes they do not.

To correct them you have to turn off the ignition and re-start the car.

The car is going in for a diagnostic check (£42.50 + VAT) on the lights next week, I'm sure the actual xenons are ok it may be just the motors or servo's that actually level the blighters.

Either way, what sort of bill would I expect from BMW to change the motors/servo's ?

If they both drop then it's more likely to be a false signal/loss of communication with the levelling sensors than the motors themselves IMO. I'm not sure if they level the once and then they are set or if they change while you are driving, either way I'd expect a diagnostic check to reveal the fault.

If it's the motors then there's every chance they'll try to flog you two new headlight units so beware!

Don't worry, there is not way I'm buying new headlamp units £££££££'s (flog the car first).............. which reminds me of my old R32 sidelights (but thats another story).

Thanks Ben, at least if they do try fob me off with 'that will be new headlamps sir' at least I can fight 'em with 'have you checked the sensors'

Bingo.

Update is that 'apparently' they had been set too low at it's 1st MOT !!!!!!!! (which they carried out).

They have been reset where they now work perfectly, so please tell me why they 'worked intermittantly'

They either work correctly or they don't.

Still, it 'only' cost £42.50 + vat......
