OGWT
my car got stolen and has now been recovered, apparently the interior has been doused with petrol,my question is does anyone have any experience in cleaning this or what any effects either short or long term exposure would have on the leather/plastics?thanks in advance What type of leather finish? If its urathane covered use Iz einszett 'Plastik-Reiniger' is an intensive, non-corrosive, non-acidic two-phase deep water-based detergent cleaner for polyurethane covered automotive upholstery. Removes stubborn grime build-up body oils, sweat, dirt, and grime build-up thoroughly and effortlessly. This product restores your interiors original texture and resiliency. Use to clean all coloured and clear water-based acrylic polyurethane covered automotive upholstery; this product is biodegradable, formalin-free and environmentally friendly. Lightly spray onto a micro fibre towel (do not spray directly onto surface) and apply to surface, one panel at a time with a slight downward pressure. The other problem you may be left with is odour, especially if the petrol has permeated the foam via the stitching or micro fissures of the covering

Hi Why do you advise this technique? Thanks Geoff
OGWT
IMO you don't need to saturate the upholstery panel, this method will apply a thin even layer and not waste product.
steelwind101
Oh ok. When i am giving my leather a monthly clean i too use a cloth and a foaming cleaner. Here is my take; its likely what is left on the leather is stains from what is in the petrol. Leather isnt flat, so i would recommend leather cleaner the foams up and the use of a gentle brush will help work the foam in to the finish. The foam will lift out the stain and keep the little creases of the leather clean. In the long run this i what will keep the leather in optimum condition. Use a clean cloth to wipe away the dirty residue. After cleaning i would recommend you apply a protector to the leather. Most often these products are called "conditioners" though the idea of applying oils etc. is a not really important as mentioned above most leather has a clear plasic coating on these days. A couple of products i recommend from personal use would be Chemical guys leather cleaner. YOu can get it on ebay for about £6.99, just ensure you get a spray head. I protect my leather with 1Z leather care or Wolfgang Leather Conditioner/Protector. I also highly recommend Wolfgang Leather Cleaner though it costs about £11 from Motorgeek.
