jamieg
Just wanted a heads up really, I'm wanting to clay my car but I'm not so sure on the process. Here's what I'm going to purchase - Halfords is good for these as they currently have a 3 for 2 offer on cleaning products. Meguiars NEW #21 Sealant Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Kit Meguiars Wash & Wax Kit What I'm looking to do is rinse/pre wash the car off, wash with the shampoo, rinse, then use clay - wash with water only, use wax and then sealant. Is this the correct process? Any advice would be appreciated
Tarmac_Terrorist
Hi Jamie, Does the Megs clay kit come with some with a lubricant? Just make sure you use plenty of lube to the clay glides smoothly without 'grabbing' and marring the paint. You may want to consider polishing before sealing. It all depends on the age / condition of the paint. A cleaner polish like Autoglym SRP would help remove & fill some minor scratches / swirls much improving your finish. I've not personally used those particular megs products but the general rule of the thumb is apply sealant then wax. That's because the solvents in the sealent are likely to remove the wax upon application where as the wax should usually happily sit on top of the sealant providing additional protection and add wetness to the look. In short the process should be: Wash thoroughly Clay Wash again & dry Polish Sealant Wax You may need to allow 24 hours for the sealent to cure before applying your wax. Have a look at the labels. I would certainly try to allow 4 hours. Hope this helps.
jamieg
Cheers TT. Do I also need to somehow strip off the wax currently on the car with paint cleaner or something like that?
jediknight83
Jamie The clay is mildly abrasive and will strip off the previous wax layer anyway. I'd definitely recommend polishing after claying. Like i said clay is abrasive and will leave its own marks, sometimes faint and sometimes very noticeable depending on how soft the paint is. Then use a sealant and then wax. Hope that helps
steelwind101
You will need a paintwork cleaner before #21. You will need to wait 12hrs before topping #21. I would not top #21 with Gold Class, i would think it would remove some or all of it and leave you will no advantage in looks and certantly not protection. Meguiars #21 is the pro-version of Meguiars NXT wax. Geoff
jamieg
Probably a daft question but the bumpers are coloured, can you also clay the bumpers etc... or stay well clear of the plastics "bumpers"?
Tarmac_Terrorist
Painted bumpers are fine to clay as are painted & lacquered alloys
