Firstly thank to all for your help with my previous post especially tt and steelwind the primera looks a lot better, though going through all your posts/pics and being gobsmacked at what you can do with paint by cambridge autogleam i`ve got a long way to go and a lot to learn. Now the help bit:o.The car almost shines now thanks to you guys but the swirls are still bugging me.With as you know with the resources i have at mo and the reccomendations i ended up using ag paint restorer-scratch x2-srp-seal then colinite 476 and am quite pleased but some of the swirls/scratches are still evident and look more like theyre blending into the paint with a small dip in the paint rather tham flat, also where i touched some stonechips up with paint/clearcoat the clearcoat doesnt seem to have been touched after rubbing and there is a half inch area thats like crazes white and black that i can`t shift(think bird droppings caused this).Ive assumed alot of this was because i hand applied this and maybe wasnt using enough pressure although some bits seemed better using a cheapy polisher though it wasn`t much faster than by hand once i started pressing with it.

I suddenly realised i had a nearly new B&D random orbital sander with variable speed which has a 120mm round baseplate that can be attached to it and have found and since ordered 2 velcro backed flexipad sponges one blue and one pink.Should i give this a go and be brave & will this used with the products i have improve on the swirls and finish or will i need another type of swirl remover liquid to use with the sander polisher?.To a certain degree i can practice on one door panel/wing that some sh*t rearanged for me kindly and then did a runner,so until the funds are available to sort it i can try on them 2 first. Also having learn`t my first lesson of being carefull by not masking a badge when using the electric polisher(shiniest black-was silver GT badge in the country) should i mask the edges of the panel like i`ve seen on some pics on your posts?.

Thanks in advance,Neil

Hi Neil, There's no harm in giving the B&D a go, although i'm not familiar with the model or pads you have.

I've not used scratch X personally but most products are usually ok with a dual action polisher. I'd initially go easy and see if the swirls can be removed with as little polishing as possible. I would work an area of about a square foot and move the polisher slowly (approx 1 inch per second) and make several passes. Inspect the work frequently. You may find a filler polish like Autoglym SRP will also produce excellent results via machine using the method above. Hope this helps. +++

Hi!

Glad to have been of help, its been quiet on here recently....where has everyone gone? I have been trying to use up alot of products after a sorting out my garage i wanted to make sure i get though some shampoos and QDs!

I dont know much about your polisher of the attachments you have so i would be cautious in what you do. There are two main types of polishers, those with a head that orbits in a fixed pattern and those that spin but the head moves randomly from side to side and up and down.

The first type can easily cause damage the paintwork, even if you dont have an abrasive polish a poor pad can marr your paintwork. The second type can be weak unless its one of hte more well known brands (Porter Cable, Meguiars), so any serious abrasives will not be broken down such a polishers.

ScratchX unless its a really old bottle will work by DA, it can get gummy though. I would advice using it on a medium abrasive pad also known as a "polishing pad".

Applying any All In One product like Super Resin polish by machine will really improve the results you get. Machines can work the product in to the paintwork more throughly so its ability to hide any marks and swirls is greatly increased.

Prehapes, air on the side of caution and try the ScratchX on a test area. Then get the car out in to the sun or under a strong light to check for micro marring etc. ScratchX by machine tends to thin out and dry when used by machine, wipe away residue after each section.

Watch any rubber seal, the polisher and polish will likely clean those up and leave nasty and potentialy damaging marks on your pads! Mask those off if possible, masking the edges of panels is not so important (i suspect).

Its worth noting, even a pro detailer may not be able to reach 100% correction. Some defects are permanent, IE: deep scratches and polishing acid etchings (from birds poo) can lead to thining of clear coat and result in no improvements. Often wet sanding is only answer to serious bird crap.

You have a black car which has not always been treated the best, if you get 90% perfect then thats probably about 100% perfect for a non garage queen in black!

Let us know how you get on....photos?!

Thanks again guys and here`s a brief update.I`m getting a tad peeved at mo,seems we have a microworld here the past few days resulting in half hr rain half hour sun alternating so i`m still sat here waiting for long enough to wash, dry and play.Picked up the pads yesterday made by flexipads one blue i would call medium and one pink soft Popped out today with the intention of topping up the AG and scratchX restorers/polishes i have but sidetracked, unknown to me just round the corner was a bodyshop suppliiers so went in.Totally amazed that locally there was all the farecia? stuff you guys rate bottles, pads loads of stuf. While i was trying to remember what you`d recommended in the past counter guy asked if he could help.explained what i was planning and he steered me away from that section and recommened 3m finnesse-it and a black soft pad.anyway as much as i looked at the farecia stuf this is what he said was best,so thats all me birthday money gone.

What do you guys reckon to this stuff b4 i find a spot of dry weather and play, and do you reckon if its any good i should use the blue pad or the pink one?.Ta

Hi!

I dont know of any inflatable garages but it was a nice day here today!

The 3M stuff is good, im not sure about the one he mentioned. It seems to be a fairly mild polish so try it on the weakest of the pads you have first then up the pads if it doesnt work well enough!

The farecia stuff i know what you mean, i have never used it. I dont think its so popular with detailers as its rather...."cumbersome" more of a bodyshop product.

Let us know how it goes, i hopefully the rains stays away!
