Mechanically, it's based on the 308 hatchback, engines include 1.6-liter turbo fours with 156 or 200 horsepower and a 2-liter turbodiesel with 163 ponies. Also available with the oil-burning mill is a hybrid drivetrain supplemented by a 37-horsepower electric motor that matches the top gas engine's output while upping the ante with all-wheel-drive and environmental bragging rights. From launch, there will be a less powerful non-turbo version of the 1.6 petrol engine and in 2012 there will be a four-wheel-drive diesel hybrid version, which is a truly exciting prospect for TDK. With this very combination, the RCZ will be able to return 72.4mpg, will puff out only 95g/km of CO2, and deliver huge performance due to a combined 369lb ft of torque. But £20k ?! Anyone with half a brain will look at a Scirocco for the same money, but with real performance to match, and some quality too.. in 2012 there will be a four-wheel-drive diesel hybrid version, which is a truly exciting prospect for TDK.
