Hi people !!!

need a little help and guidance as new to the this !! lol

i have a 2004 (04) Vw Bora TDI se 130, 77k miles. vw fsh !!!

owned this car for just over a year now got it nov 08!! but in the last month a few things have started to go wrong with it. had the car serviced at a VW dealership in sept 09 had the cambelt changed and a fuel economy chip fitted . no issues.

in dec 09 i had a problem with the car cutting out after starting it from cold after abt 15-20 mins the car cut out and would not strt. got it recovered to the vw grge and they advised that the fuel pump and fuel relay were faulty, had these replaced car ran fine. mechanic there mentioned that the engine was noisy and shuddered and vibrated alot when ticking over, he suggested the flywheel and clutch would need changing.

used car over the xmas period no probs but did notice that the engine was shuddering and was noisy. so i thought id get a 2nd opinion and went to another grge, this grge (was recommended by a friend in the grge industry) diagnosed that the car seemed to be missing when ticking over and suggested that the injectors would be the cause of this and said they would strip the turbos down and clean them ! said id get back to them !!

now today jan 13th-2010 , i was on the motorway when overtakin another vehicle car picked up and then all of a sudden lost power !! car struggled and i could not hear the sound of the turbo kicking in !!

please help with any advice and comments .

thank you !!!

Hi Wugga!

What is a 'fuel economy chip'? The 130 engine is damn economical and will produce 55 mpg all day long if cruising at 70-75 mph.

I'd suggest replacing that chip with the original.

Also, check the belt timing

Meanwhile, I'd change the MAF (about £60 on exchange), a faulty MAF would explain the loss of power. Restart it and you'll have a turbo again! Use a good fuel too (Shell V-Power) for a while to clean the injectors - and/or get some Millers Diesel Injector Plus additive in there.

Good luck!

hey cruiser647

thanks for that !! i have noticed the mpg on the car has dropped loads does around 42 mpg now wheres as b4 it was around 50 !! the fuel chip supposed to help increase the mpg and acceleration.

what is a maf ? and what does that do ? would u say the turbos need cleaning ? spose its not safe to carry on using the car ? and do u think the flywheel needs replacing ?

thanks.

I doubt the flywheel needs changing (I hope)

The MAF sits right at the exit of the air filter housing and mesaures the temperature and amount of air going to the engine. The signals it sends to the ECU adjusts the amount of fuel the ECU shoves to the engine. It's a 5 - 10 minute job to change, you'll need a proper MAF, a crosshead screwdriver and some big pliers to undo the German 'Jubilee' Clip (DO NOT LET THE CLIP GO, KEEP IT OPEN!!)

Turbo shouldn't need cleaning.

However, the other issue you might have is the N75 Relay that controls the variable vanes onthe turbo. That's easy to replace too.

first of all though, check for loose turbo air pipes.

Not sure about using the car - could leave you stranded or cause an accident if it 'dies'?

ok thanks for that when it comes to changing stuff im rather sh1t but may have crack at it,

i spk to my mate who works as a mechanic for a vw dealer in cardiff, he seems to think that the clutch has gone and this caused the car to lose power . just b4 the power loss i was overtaking abt 65-70 mph in 4th going to 5th car was pulling nice then i smelt burning , car dropped from 70 to 60-55 mph and that there was no pull. the revs were high and the car would not go any faster when i put my foot down

all the way home the car moved but there was no umph or kick to it !

so could the clutch going cause this issue ??

sorry for being a pain but this is only the 2nd car i have ever owned. n i rather like this bora ! lush car when running good !!

Hello there im Simon, if your lacking in power it could be the air mass meter, they always go and so do the turbo's. in the last 2months i have replaced 4 turbo's and i do work for V,A,G garage in High Wycombe, dose the fault go if you turn the ignition off and on again??

Hello mate, if you're lacking in power it could be the air mass meter or the turbo's, both have a tendency to fail. In the last 2months I have replaced 4 turbo's and I do work for a VAG garage in High Wycombe. Is this an intermittent problem, on long runs, from starting up or all the time?

  • 2 weeks later...

been without the car for a week now, VW advised that the maf was fine they have also advsd that there is an issue with the turbo over boosting and therefor shutting off !

the VAG dude advsd to get the turbo stripped and cleaned costing £150 -£200 ! i know a new turbo would be expensive ! so i have told them to do this.

he also advsd that this may not sort the problem !! can anyone esle help with any suggestions !!

thanks in advance.

they checked those things as i did mention them !! they said they dont need changing, think it was the vanes things !! what do they actually do ?

I know you mentioned them, but at least change the MAF. they have been known to go wrong WITHOUT being flagged up as duff on VAG-Com.

Some turbos have variable vanes. At low revs, the vanes are close together so the turbo spools quickly and shoves in lots of air. At higher engine revs, the vanes open out (centrafugally) and less air is shoved into the engine. Whichi is about right for low rev diesels (I think). Means you get 2 turbos for the price of 1 (per se). IIRC

Think of military jets with variable wing geometry (ie, Tornado). Wings out means it can fly slower and is more manoeuverable. Move the wings in and thing can fly damn fast. So two planes in one.

Hope that helps!
