gadgetmind
You need to enable the 'hidden menu'. I'm sure there's a thread here on it.Or google enable hidden menu MMI 2g Yup, I'd seen about the hidden menu, and ever tried to access it, but I clearly need VCDS blessing. I just didn't realise that the DIS customisation was in there, and am also wary of the germanic content and "here be dragons" warning! Ian
PsYcHe
Dragons are the least of your worries in the hidden menu DIS customisation should still be on the normal menu, but it's maybe been disabled.
gadgetmind
Yes, but there was a suggestion that enabling DIS customisation and the battery meter were in the scary hidden menu, Naaa, scary is the wrong word, I'm tackled some gnarly stuff (such as installing air conditioning and a supercharger to a Mazda MX-5 with my own bare hands) but certainly a situation where care is key. untruenorth
DIS customisation should still be on the normal menu, but it's maybe been disabled. It was there pre-MMI upgrade, gone thereafter. I do not believe the dealer did any tweaks post-upgrade, and have seen other web-chatter about this very issue. So yeah, hoping there's someone local who can turn on the hidden menu for me, from where I should be able to bring things back again. (Incentive: beer...) On the upside: the bluetooth kit now pulls the phone directory from my iPhone, calls don't fall into black holes, and I have 3D satnav now. I did hope that the graphical parking sensor display would appear, but there must be another tweak I'm missing for that. Will google... Wizbit
You need VCDS to re-enable the battery meter and instrument cluster: Battery Meter: Controller 07, Adaptation 10, Channel 02, Add 32 to the value and your battery meter will reappear. Instrument Cluster: You need to enable the secret menu Controller 07, Adaptation 10, Channel 08 set to 1 Reset the MMI Press SETUP & CAR Go to DIAG On the second option down you can select BOARDCOMPUTER Save that option Reset the MMI
PsYcHe
You need to check which version of the parking controller you have (it's on the wheel arch next to the MMI gubbins in the boot). Or it's in the setup. I had to turn it on when I swapped my sensor unit over.
gadgetmind
I can see that this upgrade will be a tense time for me. Bluetooth currently works with the iPhone, we have battery display and DIS customisation, and graphical parking sensor display. I could live with losing battery level, but don't want wobbles with the others. I'll order the VCDS lead today. Ian
PsYcHe
They should all still work, they might just need turned back on Though the battery meter only ever shows 100% on mine.
gadgetmind
My battery meter is also odd. When I was going through the manuals, I had the ignition mostly on but engine not running for a couple of hours. I kept checking the meter and it showed 100%, so I didn't worry. Then I noticed that keyless entry had stopped working, then a few others things, then the car told me to pack it in and I had three minutes before it turned the lot off! I checked the battery meter and it was suddenly down at 10%. It might be that the value is read and stored at some point rather than being live. gadgetmind
Lead has arrived and works a treat. I have now put it away as the list of stored errors was *very* long and it scared me. I have cleared them all (after storing the file) and will see how many come back in the next week or so. Ian
gadgetmind
OK, MMI updated to the latest version (took about two hours, battery lasted fine) and battery meter and DIS re-enabled. I'd going to brave VCDS again to try and enable beep on lock and needle sweep on start. Anything else cool I can do to show my wife how well spent that £260 was? The hidden menu also shows lots of promise. Is there anything truly useful in there? Ian
gadgetmind
OK, I just ordered 4E0 057 785 B [AMI Module & Casing] and 4F0 051 592 [MOST, PSU and iPod + USB cables]) for £214 inc vat Hopefully, this should be all I need to get the job done on my 2006/56 A8. I'm confused regards the 4F0 051 510 cables E and L seem to be for pre-2009 cars K is for 2009 cars or earlier ones with the AMI firmware at v 850 P is unknown but what seems to come with the kit I just ordered. J is the Bluetooth interface that connects to the USB cable I guess I'll see what I get, see if it works, and then decide whether to upgrade the AMI firmware and/or get the cable swapped. gadgetmind
I now have (hopefully) all the bits for my AMI retrofit but they didn't come with any instructions. Also, the loom kit didn't come with iPod or USB connectors so I had to buy these separately. I can probably figure out looping the MOST cables, but on the power side I have a plug for the AMI, a flying two pin socket, and three flying leads with connectors on them. Two look to go into the socket that will mate with the CD changer power plug, and one looks like it will go into an empty way in a fuse holder, and there is a fuse supplied to populate this. It might all make sense when I pull it apart, but I'd rather have a scan of the instructions! Ian Edited May 18, 2010 by gadgetmind
PsYcHe
Or go down the easy/lazy route.. Pull the CD changer and just use the connections from that for the AMI I looked at the mass of cables I had and decided that I wasnt going to ever use the CDC with AMI, so why have both.
gadgetmind
I may do that, but the power connector on the CD seems to be different to that for the AMI. Either way, I'm going to have to figure this cable. Two of the flying wires click into a socket shell, and then then mates with the matching plug. I guess the current CD power plug goes into the socket and the plug goes into the CD. There is then an 8-pin plug Tee-d off from this cable BUT there is also a red flying lead that looks like it goes into a fuse holder. Maybe my kit connects to something that provides power when the ignition is off? I may just ignore it ... Ian
gadgetmind
Here are some piccies of my cable - Dropbox - Photos - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy. The 8-pin connector is for the AMI, and I assume the 2-pin ones (one male and one female) go inline with the CD changer's power supply. I have no idea what the red flying lead is for and I also had to insert the pins for the female 2-pin socket into the shell myself. Ian
Mitchet
Hi Ian, I've been on holiday the last 2 weeks so just seen your posts! I've uploaded the AMI manual here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7243179/AMI/AMI%20Retrofit%20Instructions.pdf ...and photos of my power loom that came with the AMI kit here: Dropbox - Photos - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy. (I've never used DropBox before so I hope the links work!). My cable didn't have a fly lead, so it was just a case of connecting the new loom to the existing power connector (which came out of the CD changer), then connecting the CD changer and AMI units. Hope this helps?! Edited May 19, 2010 by Mitchet
gadgetmind
Many thanks for that. I think I have the wrong loom and will need to get it swapped. My loom has an 8-pin connector for the AMI but only 2-pin for the in/out pair for the CD changer. I ordered 4F0 051 592, and that's what it says on the bag, but I do seem to have the wrong thing. I'll pull the CD Change and check before taking it back. I guess I also have the option of cutting into the CD Changer power supply with some scotchlocks. Mitchet
I noticed your cable doesn't have any labels on it with part numbers. It may be worth noting the actual cable part number (4FO 055 307 B) for when you go back to the dealer. The part number 4F0 051 592 is definately the one I ordered too. The fibre lead, power extenstion cable and iPod/USB connectors all came in one rather large box.
gadgetmind
My cable is in a bag labelled 4F0 051 592 The description is "Cable Set, Audi A6 Lim NF 05/2004" and "CDCHANGERLOOM" I'll take it back and explain the problem, but the part number matches every reference including the instructions you kindly sent me. If Audi can't sort it, I can just use the power plug from this loom and use scotchlock to piggy-back the cables onto the CD changer ones. Oh, and I had to buy the USB and iPod cables separately. gadgetmind
AMI now connected in place of CD Changer and working nicely. High WAF (Wife Approval Factor) other than the fiddly cables - shame it isn't just a nice dock. Oh, and her iPhone gives and error when it's connected (accessory not designed for iPhone) but it works fine. Anyway, I'm currently using a 40GB 1.8" hard drive I had lying around, but that's maybe too big: there is just too much to wade through on the menus IMO. We've got an old 8GB iPod with a busted display, and I'll stick that in there for now. I'll ask the dealer for the right cable as I'd prefer to have the changer too. I just fear that if I swap my 4F0 051 592 for the 4FO 055 307 B cable, I might not get the fibre optic cable. Anyway, let's see what the parts counter guy says - it's only a five minute cycle from my office. Ian
gadgetmind
I think I know the problem. The instructions refer to "4F0 051 592 A" whereas I've got 4F0 051 592 without the A. The non-A is for an A6 and connects just one CD Changer. The A version is the loom for various vehicles and adds the second CD Changer or AMI. Audi have ordered in the A version and I'll pop along tomorrow and sort out what we'll swap for what. Ian
Mitchet
Funny that... I chacked the box my cable in last night and noticed the "A" at the end of the part code. Audi should have spotted that when you told them it was for an A8!
gadgetmind
OK, I now have the right cable and cost an extra fiver. It didn't come with the iPod and USB leads, so you got a bargain price as I paid close to £250 with everything. However, the good result was that the knackered 8GB iPod, which I have nearly thrown away several times, works just fine despite not having a case, front panel, display, scrollwheel, etc. It's now wrapped in duct tape and lobbed in the AMI's cheesy drawer.
