My near death motorway experience

I've been in Italy since Thursday and have been rushed off my feet so haven't had time to do much. Neither VW nor the dealer has called me since Thursday afternoon so I'm going to pop into the dealer tomorrow and remind them that the problem isn't going to be brushed under the carpet.

The car feels fine but whilst driving to Heathrow I heard some odd noises that sounded a bit similar to the noises it made when the diff died but it's quite possible that I was hearing things, it was something on the road of something in the boot rolling about. It hasn't made any strange noises since. It's also entirely possible that I'm being a bit overly sensitive.

Thursday morning I'm off to APS and they'll be telling how how good a job has been done.

Update time.

I went over to APS this morning to let them have a look at it. Nathan gave it a thorough look over and he's satisfied that all is OK. If he's happy then that's good enough for me. Ed wouldn't even let me pay for Nathan's time.

No more news from the dealer, I'll pop by tomorrow if I get a chance.

So the garage can do some jobs properly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to update this, I was told that a bearing carrier had failed and in turn caused the problems I had. The dealer says they're still not sure if it was a manufacturing fault or their workmanship to blame. Oh come off it, it did 41000 miles in almost 3 years without missing a beat and then fails 3 days after the dealer worked on the rear end?

The diff is now back with VW in Germany and I should hear something more next week.

I forgot to say that when the dealer replaced the flat spotted rear tyres they were too inept to inflate them correctly. They're supposed to be 2.8 bar and were at 1.6 bar.

For my sins the car went back to said dealer yesterday to have a new water pump fitted. There had been an intermittent noise coming from under the bonnet which was diagnosed as a water pump.

Surely this dealer wouldn't be so crap as to mess up a simple fluid level check? Yep. There was nothing at all in the coolant expansion bottle. Not a drop.

It certainly wasn't my choice to take it back there but when I was told it was the water pump at fault I wanted it changed ASAP and none of the other local dealers could fit me in this week plus I'm away (viz ze Germanz) all next week.

How do these companies stay in business?

I think the main clue to the poor service here is the fact they can book you in at the drop of a hat, personally I'd have waited and taken it to a garage you can trust!

They stay in business because people like you, who want things done straight away, will pay them to do the work, in spite of already knowing what level of service to expect!

Drive around with a knackered water pump? No thanks, I don't want a warped cylinder head.

Where did I say that I paid them?

Sorry, I wasn't being aggressive in my reply (does look a bit that way though).

I think it's fair to assume you either paid or had the work done under warranty, which either way means the garage got paid.

So long as you keep an eye on the temp gauge, I'm sure the car would have been fine from your description of the problem, but obviously it's your choice not to risk it.

Either way, I'm just not sure why you'd have even contemplated ringing that particular garage after your previous experience with them? I'd have rather have got a cab for a few days.
