Check here for an in depth how do for the RNS-E on the D2. The canbus is really quite important, even thought it seems to work fine at first... +++

RNS-E Retrofit into a D2.... - A8 Parts Forum

wow thats quite a read! but i,m still a bit miffed! i was in the understanding that on a 2002 model its just plug and play? i have one plug i took out the rns-d that is not pluged in to the rns-e as it would'nt fit, its the one with the purple clip that i thought went to the s8 dis display.. is this where the can is then?

sorry for all the questions

The write up on that link is the easiest way you'll get an RNS-E to work in the D2 properly. Yes, there is a canbus in that spare connector block, but its the wrong type of canbus. The two wires from that spare connector go straight to the TMC module behind the instrument cluster, and the TMC module (its only intended purpose when it was fitted to the D2) is to convert the bespoke Bosch canbus data into standard Audi data. The RNS-E talks the audi canbus natively, so if you connect it to the wrong side of the TMC, it than ends up talking jibberish on the bus and it still doesnt work properly.

The only solution is to connect your RNS-E to the other side of the TMC module, which is where the correct canbus is located nearest.

just an update, got the clocks out today and bypassed the tmc module, found the can bus on the unused rns-d cable and hooked it to the rns-e and bingo i now have illumination and it turns off when i remove the key, it even tells me the track number etc on the dis display, just got a couple of questions for ya..when i hook vag-com up and go to radio or nav it still tells me there is no connection? i,m not sure if i need to change anything within the radio as everything seems to be ok i was curios more than anything as it must now be comminicating via the can connection.... also can anybody recomend a decent way of interfacing a dvd etc with it that also gives me the tv on the move feature....

a big thanks to it_s8 aswell
