A8 speedometer suddenly stopped working

Hi guys and gals

New to the site as i just purchased my A8 today and sadly my first post is in the form of technical help. I know nothing about Audi's unfortunatly as im a jap man at heart.

So basically i purchased a 1999 4.2 quattro sport, 129k on the clock. Lots of history, euthsiast owner ( think its nikw on here hell of a nice guy, talked me threw all the things i needed to look out for and stuff) took for a test drive, everything was fine, car went well, everything worked apart from the spare key but thats no issue tbh.

Paid money etc etc and went on my way a very happy man +++

Driving for about 25 mins and came to a cross roads and the car stalled, just died as i came to a stop ( was in tip tronic mode and not auto if that makes any difference). Restarted and everything was fine apart from the speedo and mileage counter wouldnt work along with the trip. Everything else works fine and the speedo is illuminated but just doesnt work, also the cruise controll doesnt work now which i suspect is down to the speedo no working. This all worked in the test drive and was fine up until it stalled. I tried restarting and also turning off and waiting 10 mins but no difference. Not sure if the stalling is just a coincidence but its strange how it was fine up until then.

Called Nik to see if this has happened before or is a common issue and any tips but he said he hasnt had any past problems with it which i have no reason to doubt him as he is a very nice guy.

Anyone have any tips or ideas on what i should look for or try ? im fairly capable with DIY fixes but i wouldnt know where to begin on one of these ? Is the speedo drivenf rom the box or is it electronic ?

many thanks in advance for your help

The problem is either in vehicle speed sensor, instrument cluster or connection in-between? When you say You did the check do You mean check for error codes using VCDS or similar from the OBD? If not then You need to check for error codes, You can also see speed on it so you will see if the ECU gets speed data.

i just pressed the check button on the dash.

Thanks for the help :) . Im gonna take the cluster off tomorrow and see as according to a friend at audi its moer than likely the solder/wire on the back of the cluster speedo side.

where is the speed sensor located out of interest so i can check that at the same time

  • 3 weeks later...

ok so about 2 days after i posted this i had to hit the brakes pretty hard and all of a sudden the speedo and everything started working, result :D

then on monday morning i filled up with fuel, reset the trip like i always do and as i pulled away the speedo stopped again GRRRRR . Last night took the cluster off and couldnt see any visible dry joints, loose connections or damaged wires so its not on the instrument side. Drove home ( about 120 miles ) and still nothing and parked up.

Got in the car this morning and its all working fine but then after 1.1 miles i was going round a roundabout and boom it stopped working again

Is the speedo mechanical off the gearbox or is it electronic ???? Anyone else know where things are i need to look for as its starting to piss me off lol

Hi there,

Did you ever get to the bottom of your problem? As my speedo sometimes plays up also...

(strangely its seems to do it mostly when the outside temp is very cold?)

Also, my fuel gauge plays up when the speedo stops working, but is 100% accurate when speedo works!!

I can't think of anything other than an earthing problem could cause this as the two systems are not connected...

Regards

Steve
