As some of you know i bought a new PC recently. I moved over a 750Gb HD from my old comp only to find i couldnt overwrite the existing files!

Bit of research to find that i needed to take ownership of the files and folders which i have now done accordingly.

Now i am able to delete these files but still cant amend them when in a Word document for example. I updated it and pressed save only to be told that the file is read only even though it aint.

I have my full collection of pics on there which i cant bloody amend too!

Only long winded option i can see is to copy over the folders in sections to my primary HD then delete from the old one and then copy them back over which is going to be a PITA as ive got about 600Gig worth of data.

Any help would be much appreciated. eusa_think.gif

You may need to check the access control on the files too. Take one an example, right click, properties, security (I think, I'm not on a Windows machine so can't check). You may find that 'Everyone' has read only access. Change that to full control and try again.

Copying the files to the other HD won't make any difference as the access control applied to the files will be copied at the same time.

Cheers for the reply Burble,

I have already tested copying over some files and amending the word docs and it works fine as they are a copy of the originals. I was to save amendments without any issues.

With regards to the 'everyone' full access i already did that at the time of taking ownership of the drive and its sub folders/files and still have the same issue.

finally sorted. Win7 didnt correctly populate the subfolders and files when i ameded the secutiry from the drive level. Even though i seletec the tick box and watched the progress going through all the sub folders etc and took a few min.

Now i have just placed all the folders in one new one ive created and am doing the amendments again! (tested on a smaller batch first to ensure it works this time).
