mattRo55
I just bought an Audi A6 3.0 Tdi Quattro Le Mans (woohooo!). One thing that's bugging me is this. One of my mates told me that you need to change the cambelt every 60K miles. The car I bought has 120K miles on it. I asked the dealer about this an he said there was no need to change it. Is this true?
shark_90
There isn't a cambelt, it's a chain. It's not a service item but they do have a tendency of stretching at high miles, which require the engine out to be changed.

eldavo69
My MTB chain stretches with use so don't see why this one would be any different.

mattRo55
...which require the engine out to be changed. Thanks. That puts me more at ease. What's the engine out. Is it expesive to change and can you do anything to prevent the stretching? I mean, can't you just change the chain to be safe?

He's referring to the fact that the engine needs to be removed in order to change the camchain as opposed to the ability to change it with the engine in situ as you would for a cambelt. burble
Is it expesive to change and can you do anything to prevent the stretching? I mean, can't you just change the chain to be safe? Oh yeah, it'll be expensive, more so for the labour charges than parts but still expensive. You could change the chain (I think it's 2 chains on these - a lower chain than runs around the crank to a sprocket and then an upper chain that runs around the same sprocket and the cams) for piece of mind but it'll cost you. On the Golf R32 you can get an indication of the health of the chain by reading the cam angles (I think, I checked mine a year or so ago and can't remember exactly what it measured), I don't know if the same is true on the 3 litre TDI. cruiser647
However, what is the likely hood of it failing on the 3.0 TDi?
