A8 4.2Tdi D3 - Where the hell is the Power Steering resevoir

I've owned this car for a year now and the engine is amazing and it rides and handles better than my old D2 - BUT there are some REALLY annoying design features - almost as though someone was bored and redesigned stuff that worked perfectly OK before.

However my immediate issue is that my power steering is noisy (the car has done 65,000 miles) - does anyone know:

1. how I can check the fluid.

2. IF I can check the fluid....

I went to Birmingham Audi yesterday but there was nobody available to come out and have a listen.

Any help gretefully received.

Matt.

On a W12 or an S8 the power steering reservoir is very low down under the N/S headlight, at sub-frame level.....an absolute pain to get to and to top-up.

The two models mentioned have two air boxes (one each side) isn't the diesel the same?

I think the Audi Service Schedule is to check the oil level at 55k miles(ish) for the first time - my experience is that at 56k miles mine was 80% empty (Audi did not check it at a service at 55K miles!!!) but mine does get a fairly "hard" life.

You can remove the N/S air-box quite easily but there is a rubber hose clipped to the bottom of the case - so to actually lift the box out of the engine bay is not possible. I managed to just push my air-box rearwards just enough to get to the steering reservoir.

Good luck..............

Hey Matt, I saw your post after looking online for anyone with a possibly similar issue to that of my own - very which is, very noisy power steering - been a very slight hum for a year or so, but suddenly got a lot worse. Couldn't find the reservoir and wanted to check the level (still haven't).

Did yours need a repair? If so, do you mind me asking what did it need and what did it cost please? (I wanted to PM you but I'm a new user).

I've got it booked into Coventry Audi on Thursday and would like an idea as to what it;s likely to cost assuming that the reservoir isn't merely empty.

By the way, I've got a 2006 A8 4.2tdi, with 80k now.

Thanks in advance mate,

T
