Twinspark
My company Golf is currently with Newport VW having major engine surgery. It's a GT TSI-160 DSG on a 59 plate, and had only done 18k miles. Doesn't really bother me that much, as it's a warranty repair. However... does anyone know what happens when these engines go pop? (Symptoms were EPC and ECU lights flashing, loss of power, and mis-firing under load) I gather they've ordered a new set of pistons, so it sounds quite major! Cuprabob
There are a lot of people with Sciroccos that use this engine having similar problems. As far I Understand it starts out as a misfire and ends up doing pistons in. Also ,amy people with new Polos that use the same engines but with 180bhp seem to have oil consumption issues. Twinspark
Interesting. I should get it back next week - so I'll ask for a full run down of work done when I collect. Hope it's all sorted, as if I have to reject it, I'll end up in a Focus TDCI Zetec. (Our standard issue company car - I was lucky that the Golf was in our car pool when my last car was due for renewal)
Cuprabob
Most of the owners who have had the issues have traded the cars in for another engine variant as there is a lot of sceptism that VW have identified what the problem actually is and whether they have solved it. Also, reputable tuners like Revo have withdrawn their maps for the engine due to the risks being too great and the risks of owners blaming them for the issues. Good luck and welcome to the forum
Twinspark
Got it back this morning Saw the parts bill.... £725 +VAT = £870 in parts alone. They reckoned in excess of 50 hours labour, too. Surely it would have been cheaper to order a new crated engine?
jimdiesel
Mrs Diesel has the same car, and without tempting fate the engine has been faultless in 43000 miles. Always runs on v power or bp ultimate and gives up to 49mpg on a run. However the dsg box has started juddering in 2nd which is a known fault on the 7spd dry clutch box. Still a great ( if alittle bland ) all round car though with stunning levels of NVH supression.
