Tyre Noise (I think)

I have a problem with a whirring noise which I think is coming from my tyres. This noise seems worst at about 70mph, at 90mph it seems to have mostly gone. My Mk 5 Golf GT runs on 225/45/17 Michelin Primacy tyres. I recently swapped the front and rear tyres and this seemed to make it worse. I didn't think it was the tyres until I had a faulty front wheel bearing recently replaced but some of the sound still remained. Has anyone else has this problem with these tyres or any other wide tyres.

Took the car to the ATS, they said that bad alignment won't cause this but they thought it may be a gearbox problem. I then had the car checked at the VW dealership who said that it was a tyre problem. They showed me that every other lump of tread on the inside of the front tyres was higher than the one next to it and this was causing the noise. This was confirmed when I put the front tyres onto the back and the noise went. They now only make a slight sound on the back as they are not under the load they had on the front, which I can put up with. I have ordered a pair of Barum Bravuris 2 tyres to replace the Michelins. I am quite suprised that I have had this problem with Michelins which is why I don't want to spend £248 on two replacement tyres.
