Hi,

NEW here, pls can u help with the following:

1. I have a LPG Subaru Legacy - but would like a change, so looking at an A8 4.2 (or A6 2.7 bi-Turbo) - anyone got any of these?

2. Does anyone know which is the best LPG system for the A8 or A6?

3. Someone here mentioned abt corroding if drill into the aluminium body - is this possible?

4. What would I need to look for when buying a LPG A8 (or A6) or just plain buying an A8 or A6?

5. Costs seems to be a factor, my Legacy is expensive to maintain, but using salvage parts/indy does save a bit, have people here manage to source cheap 'reliable' parts and plenty of indy's in the country?

Many thks!

Hi, i have a 1997 D2 A8 3.7 which i have recently converted to LPG in Australia. I went with the AG centrum kit which i bought off Ebay UK and had installed. I did the tuning myself as it comes with the software. So far, its only been 2 weeks, very happy with it. Consumption figures are around 12l/100km on petrol or 17l/100km on LPG around town, but i am a light foot. I absolutely love this car which i have had for over 6 months now.

Chan, I recently owned a 2.8 A8 with LPG. And whilst the feeling of putting £40 of fuel in the car to then cover 250 miles felt great, having worked out the MPG, it seems it was returning around 20MPG. Not brilliant, but not too bad.

Now, based upon some calculations I've recently carried out I reckon the following figures to be fairly accurate:

Car

Tank Size

MPG

Cost/mile

Cost/15k miles

A8 4.2 LPG

60

18

18p

£2688.29

A8 3.0 TDi

90

33.6

19p

£2922.97

A8 4.2 Petrol

90

21.4

29p

£4302.30

As you can see there's a significant saving to be had. But, these figures were based on LPG at 70.9p/litre. I've seen gas advertised today at 85.9p/litre  so this would translate as follows:

A8 4.2 LPG Cost/mile - 22p, Cost/15k miles - £3257.04 Still a significant saving.

The prinz systems are supposed to be the best, but you'll be paying around £2400 for a system to be fitted to the '8 of choice.

The governments promise to hold duty on LPG fuel runs out this year, so anyone thinking of fitting an LPG system is very brave, it won't be long before the price creeps up to almost that of petrol, and one it does, expect most of the forecourts to remove the gas pumps as LPG will effectively be dead.

Having seen it go up by 20% in less than 3 months, I can only guess that this is already happening. I paid 69.9p in December, and now regularly see it advertised at 85.9!!!!!

Really? looks like it's already started then!

I don't keep an eye on LPG prices any more to be honest as we don't have any LPG vehicles, mainly due to the fact we got fed up of having to replace the heads on so equipped vehicles, LPG and high mileage do not go hand in hand.

My fuel consumption figures on LPG are remaining fairly steady at around that 14 l/100km mark. I have some stuttering at low revs in high gears. Usually when the torque converter is locked and engine doing around 1100rpm. Thats the only real issue i have. I love this car. Am getting a new VW Polo though for running around work and where parking the A8 is a problem. I dont anticipate the Polo costing all that much less in $$ terms for fuel.
