gadgetmind
Our D3 has about 60k miles on the clock and the gearbox/transmission seems to be whining a little when drifting along at slow speeds. Should I get both engine oil and gearbox oil changed? It's not yet due a service, but those intervals seem long to me. Any other fluids I should get done on the grounds that it's cheap and prevents premature wear?
PsYcHe
Is it a quattro or multitronic? Either way, I'd recommend a gearbox oil flush and filter, maybe power steering fluid and brake fluid if they've not been done either.
gadgetmind
Is it a quattro or multitronic? Sorry, quattro with what VCDS says is the "4E1 910 156 Q" gearbox. Either way, I'd recommend a gearbox oil flush and filter, maybe power steering fluid and brake fluid if they've not been done either. Thanks. I use Audi care in Leeds for most servicing. Will I be OK getting them to do the flush/filter or the main dealer?
snapdragon
Mine too t or around the overrun, but I have 182,000 miles now. I have purchased a load of diff and final drive juice. I will report back when I've changed it.
PsYcHe
Audi might do it, but they're funny about gearbox flushes. You might want to try IVC on Pontefract Road, know another '8 owner who uses them. You need to make sure it's the correct fluid and filter for the box, but the garage will know how to do that. gadgetmind
Thanks all. It's now due a service, and I called Audi to get a price, and they said the gearbox is a sealed unit and the fluid never needs changing! When I mentioned the whine, I got the "they all do that, Sir" response.
snapdragon
It is not sealed. It is the same as any other gearbox. It has a drain plug and fill plug and removable sump and replaceable filter. It contains a lifetime fill of fluid but the documentation goes on to say change it every 70,000 miles.
gadgetmind
Thanks. I'm taking it to an Indy on Friday, and the chap they put me through to seemed to be pretty clued up. I'll let him have a listen as he said most whines on the D3 are diff rather than tranny.
cruiser647
I saw an A8 3l TDi go past me yesterday on the A1. It was whining like a good'un. The noise was louder than the engine. It was a black A8 L
gadgetmind
Ours isn't that bad - nothing another notch on the radio doesn't fix, but I don't like ignoring odd noises.
pat27
When I got to 160k I started to worry about future issues on the Gearbox, so I rang ZF who advised that it was good practice to change the oil (Despite Audi stating it was sealed for life0. I obtained the oil myself which cost £125 and then got Autotechnica in Hull to chage it and they charged me £50 (ish) labour. Andy at Autotechnica is an Audi Master Technician amd he knows his stuff! cruiser647
You'll find that the majority of A8 drivers on here have already changed the gearbox fluid. First thing I do with any used auto car I get.
gadgetmind
OK, car in for a service today at B&M Servicing in Leeds. They reckon the noise is probably the water pump, and it's leaking so needs sorting anyway, so that's getting done next week. I'll get the tranny fluid done some time, but need to cover from this £750 bill first! Oh, and MOT is due next month.
TrundleFly
You'll find that the majority of A8 drivers on here have already changed the gearbox fluid. I'm one of the minority then, hadn't heard of this. Mine has just crossed 100K miles so sounds like something I may want to get done. Is it the kind of thing any mechanic could do or does it require special Audi knowledge?

I'd go for VAG indy, they'll know and be cheaper and do a better job!

gadgetmind
OK, car in for a service today at B&M Servicing in Leeds. They reckon the noise is probably the water pump, and it's leaking so needs sorting anyway, so that's getting done next week. Yup, new water pump and belt sorted it. I also got the MOT done (sailed through) and the a/c serviced, so hopefully that's all it'll need for a while!
snapdragon
Sure do the autobox fluid, but don't forget the three diffs need hypoid oil too. I just did my rear diff. The new oil was colourless like water, here is the old fluid after 6 years...
