Vibration at low RPMs / Misfire while driving!

OK, so I'm gonna take the wee beastie to the VW Dealer tomorrow, but before I go some advice if you can....

Been out in the car for about 40mins today, picked up the GF (so was out of car for about 10mins) and when I was driving home the car is giving off an engine vibration, not unlike a misfire, a judder, when driving quite low in the top gaers, ie 4th, 5th and 6th. RPMs about 1100 - 1300. Now I know thats pretty low but its been fine before and usually I don't drive that low but I was being lazy and just coasting along. The vibration / judder happens when you accelerate and disappears at about 1400 RPMS....maybe it happens in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear but I couldn't tell. Most noticeable in 5th and 6th.

Car drives fine otherwise.... and maybe its me, but it feels faster up top, quicker thru the rev range after 4500!! Does this sound like something is up and ECU has got confused? Its nothing like I've experinced before so I'm not really sure.

Anyway, off to VW tomorrow but in the meantime if anyone has any info / experience can you let me know.

Those are very low revs for the higher gears, sounds like you are laboring the engine which is not a good thing. Better to keep it in a lower gear and spin the engine up a bit.

Don't expect much from the dealer on this, they will scan the ECU for fault codes and if there is nothing showing they'll declare that there is no problem with the car. But then again they may surpise you and actually do some proper diagnosis work, I'd be interested to hear how you get on.

Aye, my first thoughts were the labouring the engine but its been driving fine down at the low RMPs before, really smooth from 1000 all the way up!!

It was well warmed up, mind you its was a fine day today and the temp was dropping fast so maybe its was the cold air and fueling.

If I have no joy at my Local VW I'll take it to Specialist Cars VW in Kirkcaldy, these guys are good to deal with.

Had this problem very occasionally with mine (it feels like you are driving over a vibration strip) then clears as it gets going.

I have also occassionally noticed a hesitancy at low revs and then full steam ahead from 2.5 k onwards. I have mentioned this on previous posts (as have others) and it also seems dependant on how you feed the throttle in....smooth acceleration seems fine, but cruising along at low revs then foot down and it........ hesitates, then goes.

I am running on Opti / ulti but have also noticed this only happens in cold or damp weather!

Booked it in on Saturday to have it looked at (why am I not hopeful) so will keep you posted.

Cheers

Take an extreme version of this & you've got a daily drive in the Lemon. Feckin horrible, dangerous & frustrating to drive. Especially when you can't predict totally when the engine is going to kick off again.

Any news guys??

Must admit, my first suspicion was a coil pack as well!

Not too concerned though, as it runs fine 99% of the time and is only a minor niggle the other 1%.

Far better than having a feckin squeak or a rattle!!

(hope thats not bad JuJu shocked.gif

Will post over the w/end what the dealer doesnt find.

I noticed a hesitation at low rpm, it only happens with half throttle and when the engine is warm! I took it to a vw dealer, all the coils and MAF sensor showed ok confused.gif they tryed another r32 they had which did the same! They say that they do run lean which may cause it!

Does anyone who has had theres chipped still suffer from it?

Car only ever has Optimax, still not tried Ultimate!! Today it was warmer than last night and problem seems much less noticebale to the point of not being there!

I'm putting this down to rapid drops in temp.... hence why it felt faster up top, cold air, very warmed up car, not liking being driven down low mad.gif. I'll wait and see if the problem still exists when we get the warmer weather and then get VW to have a look at it.

Apart from that everything above 1500rpms is hunky dory - getting faster as it breaks the 6k mark!!

The only time ive had similar vibration faults (no at AmD, whilst at dealer) is when there is a fault with the dual mass flywheel. But sometimes its a by product of increased torque.

This is noticeable on PD engines when remapped and poking about 320 lb ft torque (like mine). Solution is not to labour the engine to much, drop down a cog.
