BMW servicing - 520D

I called the local main dealer after the ‘service needed in XXX miles’ warning came up on my 4yo 25k 520D to ask what was required. I was told to bring it in so did just that this morning.

They read the key and told me that a full service was due and that the rear brakes required a check (the latter started getting me worried as pads were replaced 6k ago by them + needed returning as they did not reset computer properly).  Anyways, the parts dept. wouldn’t answer the service guys’ phone call (all of 10m away!) so I get an 'estimated' price for the service of  £750!

In the meantime I checked with an indie (Cragos in Dartford) who quoted £280.

I also checked BMW’s website which quoted £441 for the main service and £69 for the vehicle check so circa £500.

I then called the main dealer back to ask what they were proposing to do for the £750 – didn’t get a straight answer but was told they would match the website prices even though they don’t normally use the same prices!   When I questioned the difference I was told it was due to not having accurate parts prices.  Priceless bullsh!t!

Think the indie will be getting my money . . . .

My mechanic was telling me about a new customer he has earlier at the football, she has a VW Polo of about ten years old, serviced every year at VW, she showed him last year's invoice, £450 for a service and mot.

The bloody thing only has three spark plugs and about 4 litres of oil, utterly ridiculous, I think he did it using VAG parts and the correct spec oil for about £90.

Mrs T still takes her Prius to Toyota in order to keep the battery warranty valid, I thought they were steep at £250 including mot.

What I struggle with (apart from the utter pi$$ take) is how main dealers are able to get away with this type of behaviour.  By that I mean still have enough customers to keep them in business!

The hourly rate will be £150+ per hour.  It doesn't take long to get to £600 before parts.......

Thieves.

I suspect five years service inclusive would be less than that...

I'm still struggling to understand how they get to £750 or even £500.

It must be something aside from the mileage, perhaps age related?

My 05/2013 520d has done 47,000 miles and had 2 services - the total of which is less than Cabby is being quoted for one (and I don't mean the £750 quote, I mean the £500 quote!). :roflmao:

Interesting. NNMM try putting your details in here and see what it says. https://www.bmw-service.co.uk. That's where the £500 figure came from.

I have had two warranty jobs on my 640d. A replacement headrest due to the airbag in it throwing up an error message. Dealer billed bmw for £1400.

Second one was an error message on the screen saying that the surround view wasn't working when it was. It had to go in twice for that as they replaced all the cameras and that didn't solve it so they ordered the cable that runs from

the boot to the bonnet and the cost for the two visits was £2100!! The car was in for two days both times.

Car turns three next week. Just got the all encompassing warranty for one year: £622!!

Money well spent!

The camera one amazes me - replacing loads of expensive kit without actually knowing what has failed!  Typical warranty repair and, whilst it feels good getting that much work done for 'free', ultimately that cost has to be recovered somewhere.  Probably explains my £750 figure :).
