Andrew
I really like the Passat we bought but it will, on occasion just crank without starting when you press the key into the dashboard. It will also rough run after one of those episodes and on some rare occasions conk out while stationary. Did that yesterday. Took it to VW who said they could not find any faults reported and then suggested it might do that to clear the particulate filter. I.e. It is a feature rather than fault. Seems like a shit feature to me, any ideas? It is under warranty and they wanted to take it for an extended soak test but it can be two weeks between episodes. Tipex
It could be the DPF, I'd expect it to throw up the warning light if it was, they can run rough when doing the regen on the filter but it shouldn't affect the starting as it won't regen unless the car is up to temperature. Anything with a DPF ideally needs a good run every once in a while, 20 mins at motorway speed is recommended to allow the DPF regeneration to happen, what sort of journeys do you make in it? I can't say it's something we've experienced to be honest, it's the refusal to start that is throwing things, I wonder if it could be something like the crank position sensor? Intermittent faults are a b*stard, the garage ideally needs to see it when it refuses to start, but the chances of that happening...
Andrew
It does mostly short journeys with the 20 min good runs thrown in once a week or so. There are no warning lights or anything although once I saw the DPF flash for maybe less than a second. It hasn't happened since it came back from the garage a week ago. The annoying thing is that they said it "could" be the DPF. But like you say, the turning over with no starting wasn't exactly something they were expecting as a symptom. jimdiesel
What year is the Passat, Andrew. I know the last of the B6 and early B7s had fuel pump issues especially the 2.0 tdi models.
Andrew
It is a 63 plate B7, 2.0. Probably too late huh?
jimdiesel
Yes think they got the fuel pump issue sorted by then.
