Engine just stopped

Hi everyone my vw golf just stopped going just out off the blue,one minute it wS driving great,then,it just turned off.There was no indication to let me know something was wrong.I can't get a mechanic to use a diagnostic computer,to see if it shows anything wrong, does anyone have some advice on what it could be,starting with minor stuff first.Not many people know much about vw's where I live.Hoping to get some good replies, cheers
