[Audi A3/S3] 18" Alloys for 1.8TS.....HELP !!

Having just worn out the 16" Avons on my 2000 'W' A3TS, I reckon it's time for a change. Why buy 16" tyres when you can go for an 18" alloy & tyre package!!

I think I have found the wheel I prefer....it's a Tecnomagnesio Montreal. Hav a look....

I have a few questions though, if anyone can help! confused.gif

Audi say that they only have data for up to 17" wheels on the A3. Does anyone here hav 18s on an A3 that can tell me an offset/tyre size combination that works??? I know that the recommended 17" offset is ET38 but what about 18s????

Also, the tyres I have now on the 16s are 205x55x16 so would it be best to go for a 215x35x18 ??? That seems to be the closes match the the original diameter that I can find. This would mean that the overall difference in diameter with 18s would only be 10mm.

Finally...anyone already got these wheels??? Any comments on the quality etc? I like the design as it's similiar to the 17s/18s you see on many A3s but I wanted something close to that type but slightly different.

Oh...and suggestions for where to buy wheels/tyres??? I can only find two places that sell Tecnomagnesio - Elite Direct and XS Motorsport.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

SMc

i'm not entirely sure on the offsets but i assume that the easiest way to find out is to call audi and get the stats for the 18 inch wheels for a TT or S3. They'll be the same for the A3.

If my memory serves me correctly, the tire size for the TT 18 inchers is 225/40/18 and the offset is ET35. I would double check that with audi though.

BTW - i like the technos. They're nice and light too. Not many places stock them unfortunately so Elite may be the best option. I know that they hold a reasonable stock of technos. beerchug.gif

Thanks for the reply Floyd. I didn't ask about the TT offsets/dimensions etc. but Audi did tell me that even the S3 only had listings for up to 17". Officially, that's the biggest size of wheel they put on.

It seems to be either 215x35x18s or 225x40x18s. I'm pretty sure both will work but really would like someone with an A3 on 18s to dive in on this post....please???

Here's another thing....going around in circles (sorry for the pun!) trying to decide on tyres. I'm aiming for something around the £100 each mark. So, it has been narrowed down to Hankook K104s, Toyo T1-S Proxes, Falken 451s.....and another couple I can't think of at moment. For every tyre there seems to be someone saying it's good or bad! Arggghh...decisions decisions!!

Opinions..???

Hi Luuc...

Thanks for your reply mate....Can you please tell me what the tyre size is you have? I reckon it will probably be 225x40x18 but just want to make sure.

Just out of interest, what make of tyre is it you have and do they perform well?

Cheers,

SMc

They're from rochfordtypes.co.uk and the tyres are 225/40/18, premium economy. They came with the car so I can't really compare them against other tyres. They provide all the grip I and haven't worn especially quickly. However, if I had to choose another set of tyres I'd make sure that the outside wall overhung the allow enough as the current ones are too far removed from the alloy.

The current hot tires seem to be Toyo Proxes and the goodyear eagle F1. I've personally got Michellin pilot sport's on my S3 and i really like them. The wear has been brilliant (i've done 20k miles on them so far) and they are very, very grippy. i'm really impressed with them.

The toyo's are supposed to be very good in the dry weather but not so good in the wet whereas the F1 is supposed to be a good all-rounder.

If it was me choosing, i'd probably go for the F1's. The Michellins are very expensive in comparison.

Luuc....Thanks mate....225x40x18s it is then!! cool.gif

Floyd....Thanks for the tyre feedback. I've been leaning towards the Toyos but will check out the Goodyears first. Amazing you have had 20,000 miles from the Michelins!! My Avons, after just under 10,000miles are, in the words of the guy who was about to fix my puncture..."they are well F**ked mate...you've had your wear out of them!"

It's Michelins I have on the rear....and also one brand new on the front (which was the spare before that puncture!) but it's hard to comment as you really need to experience 2 newish tyres on the front to give an accurate account of their performance.

Depending on price, it looks like coming down to the Toyos or Goodyears. Think I'll ask about these tyres on the main board to get some more feedback though.

Cheers,
