Colin M
Just playing around with the new D70 and it's packaged lens, an 18-70mm zoom (equivalent to 24-105mm on a 35mm film camera). This picture was taken at maximum zoom and large image size. I have resized it to 640x480 to fit here: Using Photoshop, I zoomed into the detail of the pic, from the same image file and this is the resolution at the limit of the zoom. Next I did the same with the limit of the zoom and macro focussing at around 380mm focal distance. This is the quality of the above image, area expanded for more detail: The same test but with my CD collection: Setting aside all the other functions of the camera, these images show the quality of the lens Nikon supply. I would be interested in comparitive shots from some of the more compact cameras.
Colin M
Next I wanted to see how it coped with extremes of light and dark, the bright sun streaming through the blinds in my lounge for example. Note the small clock on the left of the mantlepiece: Then just zooming in on the image with Photoshop to pick up the small clock, this is the resolution of the image recorded on the camera in large JPEG (3008x2000 pixels and 2.9mb in size). I haven't experimented with the RAW file yet (no JPG compression and 5.0mb each image).

DHA
give us a shout if you want to play with my sony dsc P72. Its a 3.2 mega pixel version and max file size is just over a meg on the fine picture setting. Good enough for a ham fisted atco

Frodo
I've currently got a Fuji S5000 and had it for about a year. It has done me proud and got some great snaps at Twickenham last year when England were parading around. The 10X optical zoom is what made me go for it. What would the equivalent 10x zoom lens be for a 35mm camera?
Colin M
On a 35mm camera, the 50mm lens is generally accepted as being equivalent to the view through the human eye, so a 10x zoom would be about 500mm.
peterb
However, the Nx zoom figures being quote in specifications tend to relate to the range of zoom setting. So, a 10x zoom might, for instance, be a 20 - 200mm zoom, or a 15 - 150 zoom. To work out the equivalent 35mm focal length for a digital camera, you need to know the size of the image sensor being used (physical dimension, not pixel count!). R32North
Very nice clear shots - was looking at the D70 as well, lovely piece of kit! Heres a pic I took last year in Mallorca, Fuji 602S Zoom, 2048x1536 (3MPs, normal setting (as apposed to fine)), using Super Macro. Rejigged in Photo shop, to 800x600.
