meriafel
Have recently bought a 52 plate Passat Sport TDi 130 Estate with 59k mileswith FVWSH. The day after purchase I had the 60k service (cam belt, brake fluid change etc) performed by the original supplying dealer and purchased the Mileage Top-up to retain the third year warranty. Nothing untoward showed up on the diagnostics or on the subsequent road test but I'm not happy with the engines 'smoothness' compared with my previous 110 TDi Passat fitted with a Bromley's chip. The 130 has huge torque and revs smoothly but when gently acccelerating from a trailing throttle it has 'coughed' a couple of times and doesn't have that smooth transition that I'm used to. It's as if the engine is down slightly on one cylinder making progress in normal traffic unpleasant. Driven briskly all seems OK. Am I experiencing normal characteristics and have others experiencrd this? The car is booked in for checking but I would appreciate your comments. Gaunty
That’s definitely not normal and you were probably right extending the warranty, get it in quick. I had a lumpy A4 1.9TDi 130 and it needed the jets replacing; they said that if it wasn't under warranty it'd have been over £1k worth of work. I'm not saying it’s the same thing because mine wasn't down on power although I might have got it sorted before it got as bad as yours. Good luck. meriafel
Thanks for the advice, its going in next week so I will keep you informed. Did your problem with the A4 show up in the diagnostics. Out of interest I today removed the engine plastic cover and found that the insulation layer had become unbonded from the hard plastic on the drivers side and had been pushed upwards and looked as though it could have been fouling an 'actuator valve' at the back of the rocker cover. (I've pop riveted it back into place with 25mm alloy washers on the inside so it can't be a problem). What does this valve do and could it upset the running if its movement is restricted? Gaunty
They didn't tell me if it showed up on the diagnostics, there were no warning lights or anything. I simply dragged a mechanic out to it and he said it shouldn't sound like that, it was in a few days later. I don't know what the valve does, I've got a Passat 1.8T at the moment.
