Exhaust Guru needed!!!

Hi all,

Well I went to a company this morning to talk about potential exhaust purchase from moi. Now I drive a car, that from the headers through to the middle silencer runs twin 2" pipes. From there, 2 more pipes run to the rear silencer, again 2" in diameter.

Now these guys are telling me, that if I were to replace the middle silencer, and pipework with a 2 1/2" single pipe (with the required 'y' piece after the cats) that this would give me better performance, than if I were to go the quad route, a la Sven and Botang (see here if you already haven't)

Now as the post title suggests, I'm no exhaust guru, but if I've got two 2" pipes, then that effectively gives me almost 4" of flow, whereas the 2 1/2" would only give me 2 1/2".....

....help meeeeeee!!!

They've given me a good price too £650 all inclusive!! 169144-ok.gif

Doesnt sound right to me mate, if its better to have a single pipe dont you think Audi would have done it crazy.gif

Did they fill you with the confidence EPS did with Sven and Me?

I'll ask Toby for you later when I see him 169144-ok.gif

Cheers Matt, be interesting to hear what Toby has to say.....must admit, I wasn't overly pleased with the advice.....but that's why I've posted this here.....maybe someone out there can shed some light.

I'd have thought replacing with two 2" pipes straight through would have been the best option..?

I had a word for you, basically he goes along with my thoughts, wouldnt let them look at the car let alone touch it. There is some theory in what they are saying as the Y can* create a similar affect to the X in my system so could potentially give more mid range power as it will create that vacuum in the other pipe which is what the X achieves.

However you notice my little *, can, i.e. if its exactly perfect, scientificly calculated, etc, etc. I doubt they will be going to this trouble will they smirk.gif

It MIGHT give you better mid range but will kill the top end power.

Allmost but not quite right! An extra 1/4" around a 2" dia will give you far more area then just a 1/2" tube. But 2x2" doesn't give you 4" of flow.

Back to school time!

2x2xpie gives you 12.56

12.56x2 (for twin pipes) gives 25.12

2.5x2.5xpie gives 19.625

So 2 2" pipes gives 25.12 flow area

Single 2.5" Gives 19.625 flow area

A single 4" gives 50 flow area

Think you get the idea! What they mean is a single system is very easy for them to make!

I don't mind paying the going rate, for good quality product, service and workmanship.

What I do mind paying for, is the chance to give someone else a laugh at my expense. I don't like shoddy service, if I can give a good service (fnarr, fnarr) to my customers, then I expect it from companies where I'm expecting to spend my hard-earned.

Thanks for the link Paul, I'll check them out. 169144-ok.gif

That looks more like it,

Otherwise it may be worth giving EPS a call and ask them what they can do without the car, I have posted a picture before of the A8 system up on a wall on display, Just try and find a skilled person to take on the fitting side of things.

Roelf de Haan is the man you would need to speak to.

Be careful on the 'getting it sent' bit, as Matt A8 is a pre-faceleift. Tony's is the facelift model. Not sure if there were any suble underbody changes to the exhaust mountings etc etc.

So you might have to visit, rather than get one sent. Maybe Sven can help out here, as his is a facelift model................
