Sounds like a belt slipping & a bloody misfire

First couple of my problems with my 98 S8. Yesterday I started the car and it sounded like a alternator belt was slipping. An odd screeching noise that got louder as the rate of change of revs increased....DOH! I was a bit concerned because it got worse and with the bonnet up it doesn't sound good.

Anyhow. I was really quite worried about but after leaving the car for 1 hour parked up the sound had gone. It returned after 15 mins driving and then got worse again.

I went to see an independant (the main dealer in Bristol wouldn't even entertain a mechanic listening to the sound....tossers) and he said it sounded like the water pump on the way out and also checked the header tank and noted that there was no water circulating back into the header tank. He said it should be okay to get the 200 miles back to Yorkshire and sure enough it did.

I am now going to book it into a dealer - any ideas or helpful suggestions?

Secondly. A couple of days before my screeching incident I was out in torential rain and the car appeared to "stutter" a couple of times. Nothing too serious and it didn't get much worse. I decided to reset the TPS (20 seconds throttle plus hold for 5) and that made no difference. Anyway, yesterday is suddenly got really bad, feels like the car just cuts out at about 15% throttle at 2k revs. Makes it a complete pig to drive but I can work around it by using the tippie-shifting and not changing out of first or second until 3k revs. Again, any ideas?

What a week. I blew the engine in my Lotus last week and the Ducati is still off the road. The only car working fine is the racing Bimmer and that's 230 miles away being prepped for the Nurburgring in two weeks time so I have 3 cars and one Motorbike but nothing to travel in frown.gif

I once had a huge scretching noise on my A8 when it was cold out after start up (probably around 0 C at the time).

It sounded like scretching that I could not pin point, it also had a very metallic sound, like rocks in a metal tumbler....

Anyway, it was the transmission filter/transmission hydraulic pump. If the noise is there when it is cold, and goes away as the car warms up, it could very well be that you need to change your transmission fluid and filter. It drops too much pressure and reduces the net positive suction head available (NPSHA) to the transmission hydraulic pump to less than the net positive suction head required (NPSHR) to prevent caviation.

So in my case, I was listening to the hydraulic pump cavitate.

Check this article out...

And this one shows you how to service the tranny.

Good luck! Tell us what happens!

Thanks Paul but it has different symptoms. The noise is NOT there when I first start the car but starts after the car has been running for a while. I though it was heat related but even after stopping the car for a few mins (petrol) the sound went away so either something is getting very hot (and hence cools down quickly) or it's something else. I am going to get the tranny fluid changed as the car has done 75k miles now....it's going to have to go to main dealer in Yorkshire as I have not found an independant yet and I DO need to have a loan car etc...

Nope, tried the aircon thingy. Makes no difference, it only sounds like a belt noise at first listen. Closer attention reveals a metallic and slight grating noise in there. It is very bloody loud. Anyhoo....booked into a main stealer (Bradford Audi) with a cloaner for next Thursday...I need it back in less than a week as I'm using it as a tow vehicle for the Nurburg trip frown.gif

Argh!!!! This maybe a rather serious problem. The car has not moved since I got back from my trip and when I drove it today (in tippy mode) after a while the gearbox seemed to be slipping and the gear selector numbers on the dash went progressively from 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 then the whole sequence of numbers lit up and I lost drive to the wheels - regardless of whether I was in D or in tippy mode. Stopped the car, switched it off and restarted it and it was fine again in full auto mode.

I am wondering if the screeching noise (which also exists when the car is in neutral), jumpy and hesitant fueling are all actually part of a bigger gearbox problem. The car is off to a main dealer on Thursday so I expect to be taken roughly from behind....

The first thing I would do is get the tranny fluid and filter changed, it sure sounds like your hydraulic pump has been cavitating severely.

I know it doesn't seem like it comes from the tranny, but with what you have mentioned, I can almost guarantee that's the case. The fluid needs to be changed, but MORE IMPORTANTLY the filter. It is dropping too much pressure!!!

Good luck, and don't let them tell you that you need a new gearbox, tell them you want the fluid and filter changed!

On the topic of tranny's mine seems to have a wet sump! I saw it while servicing the car. Prior to the service the torque converter was doing that engage-disengage thing between 1st and second. Since I changed the engine oil and topped it up it seems better for some reason (BTW are you suppose to check the engine oil level when hot or cold?) and if I need to replace the sump gasket on the tranny how much am I looking at?

Cheers

Right. Car has gone in and I have been given a quote for approx £6,000 + VAT to correct the faults plus a service frown.gif

The gearbox had several errors including wrong ratios etc...

the complete list of VAG codes are :

01371

01370

01368

00991

00956

and

17978P150

16705P0321

171125P0741

17115P0731

17114P0730

17117P0733

17116P0732

Whew....any ideas chaps as I am loathed to shell out this huge lump of money. They are investigating the gearbox further and will drain the fluid and check for colour etc...but I am in desperate need of some inspiration
