cerbera
TOK - are they not the wheels you're looking to stick on your Turbo ? Mills - assuming that the car is in good nick and it has a FULL service history then that sounds like a very good price. Personally I'd have no issues buying an older car again, providing all the above is in order. Beemers generally seem to be pretty solid..... ...on that note I've just spoken with Barons BMW and it's the VANOS that's gone on the car. Everything will be covered under warranty, but I probably won't get the car back until next week now. This would cost IRO £1200-£1500 to fix so very glad it's covered! As it's one of the known weak points with the E36 M engine I'm not all that surprised and actually quite relieved that it's nothing 'more' serious.... I expect that mine will go at some point, but that's one of the main reasons I'm keen to maintain the BMW extended warranty, for that additional peace of mind! cerbera
Just spoken to Barons and the car is nearly sorted - but will get it back on Monday as they want to fully road test it and valet it blah blah. Spoke to the Manager and he said that it would normally be £1200 + vat for the parts and £800 labour..... VERY glad I now paid a bit extra to get it from a dealer! It will be sent back to me on a low loader on Monday all cleaned up - now that's what I call service! Once again - Barons JT PS - In the interim I'm trying to see what MPG I can get out of the Bora.........53MPG on a run so far
jbomz3
Hi , i've got a '98 m roadster and had the double vanos unit replaced at the begining of december and it cost me near on £3,00 with new sprockets and chains etc , as i was told at nott's my intake unit was sticking . A big exspense but it's really made a difference to how , not just perfomance but just the general running of the engine , i'd always read about vanos units being noisy on start up when cold , mine was at start up when it was warm , and a bit rough on tick over now there's nothing and same as i said it seems to have a bit more go again , but i can't say as i noticed any lack of it ??? . cerbera
jbomz3 - I had vanos gears changed a couple of weeks later under warranty also as the dealership said they were slightly 'noisy' when they put the new vanos unit on. That was another £2K warranty job.... God, I MISS MY COUPE..........
jbomz3
I can't remember them being noisy when i brought it (2 years ago) but i'd noticed a noise for a few seconds on start-up when warm , nothing on cold . i'd had it serviced twice at 2 different dealers (1's shite , so i don't go there no more)and nobody ever said anything same when i'd had other work done so on my last service i'd asked them to look into 1 or 2 things and give me possible causes and quote for the work , i'm no mechanic but i knew the noise was coming from the vanos as if i'd started it up with the bonnet open and as it fired up if i put my hand on the vanos a slight vibration , move onto rocker cover nothing . They looked into it and told me the vanos needs changing and with new sprockets chains and bolts (i'm fairly sure he said the intake sprocket was sticking causing the noise/vibration) but i rearly couldn't tell in performance terms but i can tell it's been changed it's quieter and i've never had a rear wheel drive before and i could 'feel' the car rocking from side to side on tick over , i can't feel it now . JJ . Still thinks it's brill only downside now i've been off work best part of 7 months with a bad back so i'm getting a bit srapped for cash , realy don't want to end up selling my pride and joy . jbomz3
I've seen some "shadowcrome" M alloys , they make mine look naff , mine looked a standard alloy finish . The wheels i saw was chrome rim alloy face , so on the rear rims they looked brill . JJ . Yeah but they are awesome motors . I want that one . jbomz3
Opel/vauxhall same isn't it , don't they swap the badges over when they get 'em here . In the mid to late '80's they fazed 'em out for that reason didn't they "we can't sell 'em 'cus they're not british" vx customers bought 'em on the pretense they were buying a british car as opposed to a german opel . Ritey
Lol, just knocked that up last night after seeing the post, can do a proper one if you'd like but rumor has it you'd set your sights on another motor so you won't be needing an S3 avatar for long ? cerbera
Dave - that would be great if you could knock up a cool S3 one What rumour is this !??! 5th car in 14 months does NOT mean that I won't keep the S3 for, oh...at least 6 months Nah, seriously, I'll be keeping the S3 for a good year methinks. Would love to get a CSL next, but it'll be a wee while away yet...... You shouldn't listen to rumours........
