tjohnson
This may seem a silly question but, how long should it take for the water temperature to get to normal running temp? I am sure it normally only takes about 10 mins max. I recently noticed that it takes almost half an hour or more. I have just arrived at work, the temp gauge was barely on 1/4 mark and the actual engine felt cold. The journey was 7 miles and took 25 mins. Does this sound like I have a thermostat problem? Drillslinger
Thermostat stuck open perhaps?? Did the heater work? (Probably didn't use it though, did you) I know if it were an older car, that's the first place I would look. But I'm not sure how it's set-up on the A/S 3's. Anyone know?? Rich
My daily journey to work is 10.5 miles, which takes about 20 mins. My S3 reaches the normal 90 degrees well within 10 minutes and I only plod along until it is up to temp. I agree that its probably the thermostat stuck open, better than having it stuck closed like I had on a previous car
Drillslinger
THAT would suck, no heater, but an engine running at meltdown temps.
TheVon
However it takes significantly more time to get the engine warm when there is very cold outside.
tjohnson
I thought about the weather effecting this, but it was 9'c this morning, which doesn't really classify as cold. I have spoken to Audi and he agreed from my description that is it likely to be a thermostat problem, especially when the car is only managing a poor 21mpg I will let you know the outcome on Friday. (Luckily my car is already booked in for two days to have a new alarm fitted!!)
Gaunty
Check you've got some water in it. I had the situation in a previous car where it had managed to empty some of its water out through a leak in a hose, I didn't notice it at first. Because the stat was above the water level it showed as cold, in actual fact the engine was red hot. 25 minutes to do 7 miles! You need to move somewhere less congested mate
Chrisg
It could be the sender. Replaced under warranty in the A3 , often spends ages at the bottom of the gauge in her A4 but the heater works within minutes of startup, Dealer told me it was a fast moving spare on 1.8T engines and i had to go back when their next stock came in !!!! philippe
Pretty sure that the problem is caused by the water temperature sensor which is fitted in the egine. Recently had the same problem, sometimes it didn't even work at all. quitte cheap repair Philippe
Drillslinger
Yeah Dude, I paid attention this morning, and I was at 90 within 6 minutes, keeping the revs under 4k, so......
