NewNiceMrMe
There is something else too. I really don't wish to offend anyone, but the fact remains that an Impreza and Evo both have VERY Chav images. Like it or not, and as fantastic as they are, their image stinks. It's not their fault of course, but there is no getting away from the fact that they don't exactly have the best name in the world anymore. They've been bought by all and sundry, chavved up to high heaven in many cases and their styling is very much up Chav Avenue right now.
garcon magnifique
Sad but true. The last Impreza I had was a black 5 door, to try and be as subtle as possible! Mind you, the GTI does seem to be attracting a few fairly chavvy owners...

simon_evo
[ QUOTE ] Not sure where you get £22k from. To compare like with like, Subaru UK list price for an Impreza WRX STi is £27k. [/ QUOTE ] Widely avavilable at around the 22k mark. Litchfield sell full uk spec uk cars with the full 3 year dealer warranty for example . An import WRX can be had for as little as about 15.5k these days brand new OTR. Given that the golf Gti is the ultimate Max Power / chav and chavved up car alongwith the Nova then the other comments are ridiculous .

Unless of course you call any modified car "chavved up", as the GTI is one of the most modded cars out there, especially the MKI and MKII models. Although the modding is usually limited to deep dish alloys, lowering and some engine tuning

I think modded cars are great if done properly and dont give a monkies if I was percieved as a chav for owning one. Who cares I Intend to chav up my little Audi when it comes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! garcon magnifique
simon_evo - it's getting boring now. stevie_d - to be fair, I very much doubt that most drivers of "chavved up" Imprezas have even heard of Colin McRae. On the prices, Motorpoint are selling new Impreza WRX STIs for £21k upwards and new Golf GTIs for £17k upwards.
NewNiceMrMe
Wow, almost 16,000 views on this review now, and catching the earlier A3 review...not to mention over 180 replies! I think I should be paid for these in future. Bags of sweets will do, ta.

RedRobin
I hear you'll do anything for a free bag of sweets, you slapper! Btw, that BBQ looks pretty cool, or should I say, hot.
NewNiceMrMe
Normally I ask for 2 bags of sweets, usually wine gums and midget gems. For you though, I'll accept just the one. The BBQ now has a lovely green cover too. Very swish!
NewNiceMrMe
I've decided I quite like the Golf GTi now. Used, that is. Not chavved up ones mind, and they seem increasingly common with all kinds of bits tacked onto them. I think the shape has worn quite well, they're clearly dropping in price in some fairly big chunks from what I can see, and they look like a good buy right now. Still think they're too expensive new though.
RedRobin
Reading this thread again I see that there used to be a time when you (MrMe) and I used to be able to have a friendly banter . I think you've always appreciated what the Mk5 GTI offers as a car but I take your point about their cost even though you are a mean Northerner . You wouldn't want to buy my "chavved up" one, especially if I fitted LED DRL's .
NewNiceMrMe
Indeed, I never really questioned the capability of the GTi. Yes I had a few reservations about switchgear and the horrid black plastic grille and other bits, but it'd be silly to question the drive of the car overall. The price was, and is, the problem. It's just too expensive. Furthermore, I think the Focus ST makes it look very expensive indeed now. I'd certainly buy a new ST over a new Golf GTi, and probably a SEAT Cupra too, although the interior plastics of the Cupra (especially the centre console area) are possibly the worst I have ever seen. I had a look at one in Portugal recently. Stunning exterior, excellent performance apparently, but oh my god they should shoot whomever choose the interior plastics. It wasn't the cost overall (of the GTi), it was the cost by comparison - and the cars released since the GTi have vindicated my views, in my opinion, in that area. If people get what they want out of chavved up GTi's then that's all that really matters. They're just not for me. I appreciate that cars are a very personal thing in so many ways, but it's that very fact that would stop me modifying one in any visibly obvious way.
