Si_GTi
Hi guys and gals Yep, you read the title right. I want to change the bulbs in my headlight units for different ones. As standard the sidelight and main beam bulbs are very yellow, as are the fogs for that matter - observe: I was reading in another of the VW threads that Halfrauds do a nice line in bulbs with xenon technology, making them a little brighter, but most importantly whiter, suiting the HIDs more IMO. Sadly I can't find the thread any more and didn't bookmark it Anyways... back to the point! I was wondering what kind of a job it is to get at the bulbs and replace them - I'm aware it may involve the removal of the front bumper and grille to get at the headlight units, then theres the HIDs to look out for - 10,000 volts or something mad like that? D'ya reckon that my local VW dealer will take care of the job for me in May when I next have a service, for a little extra on t' bill? I can wait until then if I must... otehrwise can anyone point me in the direction of a VAG specialist in the Midlands area...?
Ritey
I've tried it, bulbs I bought didn't really change the colour much though, a little more white but still no where near as good as the xenon colour linky
Si_GTi
Cheers Dave! I'll, erm, leave it to a dealer then - thats if they don't refuse to fit non-VW supplied parts! Last time I mentioned something about supplying my own parts for some dealer work, they stuck to their line that "our parts are gauranteed for 12 months, yours aren't" Maybe when I go up to JBS... Ritey
Doing it with no info proved to be an interesting job, but now I've done it its really quite simple. Others (mainly the golf club here) note that you can change these bulbs by moving the battery box and getting to the back covers, personally (if you haven't looked) I can't see this as being too easy, there is very little space to get my hands down there so I opted for front off. I reckon I could re do that job in about half hour, which is what VW quote anyhow. Following my guidline, as best you can I would think you should be able to do the job just as easy now. Si_GTi
To be honest I've not really had a good squizz at the space in the engine bay - but like you say, with that 1.6 16v in there, space is definitely at a premium! Maybe when it gets a bit warmer I'll take a look at some dismantling of the front bumper and lights... maybe but it's too cold! In the meantime I've still got to order some silvatec repeater bulbs for my MHW items to banish that "fried-egg" look, and will also consider performing the same task on my side indicator units too, especially if I'm going to have the lights and bumper out! Si_GTi
Cheers Wayne I'll get the bulbs purchased first, that'll be a few weeks yet I'm afraid as I've got to cover the bill for my recent snowboarding trip to Bulgaria But when I get the time and the bulbs to do it, I'll let you know! RE the R32, was that the one parked up with the MkV GTI outside the pits? And then afterwards taken back to Inchcape Telford and put back on the forecourt??
