[Audi A3/S3] Can't get sub and rear speakers to work.

I've been browsing this forum for the last couple of days and realised it's got some pretty competent members so decided to join in!!

i've recently purchased an A3 1.8T that came with the factory fitted Bose Concert cassette head unit. I decided to replace this with a Sony. The problem I've got is that the rear speakers and sub don't work on either head unit. Would there be a fuse on the amp that drives the rear speakers and sub that may have blown?

Please help as my new head unit sounds pretty crap at the moment frown.gif

humm this could be a tricky one , has it stopped working since you changed the head unit ? the amp itslef may have blown, i dont think there is a fuse between the two, have you just used an adapta lead to convert the standard wiring at the front to fit the head uni ??? you may have cut one of the cables by accident, if the amp has gone you should be able to pick on off ebay quite easily as a lot of people upgrade, have you tested the speakers tehmselfs to see if they are getting a feed at all ? - use a multi meter

Cheers for the quick reply TomK.

has it stopped working since you changed the head unit ?

Nope didn't work on the original head unit

Have you used an adapta lead to convert the standard wiring at the front to fit the head unit ?

Yep got a specialist to fit the right adapter lead from the original wiring to the new head unit

I've not tested the speakers yet so will give that a go cheers for the advice.

I will drop it into my local dealer sat morning to see if they will have a look too, hopefully they won't charge me for the priviledge!!

so has the speakers never worked since you bought it ?? the person who had it before you may have changed the set up so the wiring may be non standard on the back ... my advice would be to just get yourself a couple of decent speakers and just re wire direct from the head uni it will sound a lot better - in my oppinion the BOSE is crap anyway, i run an alpine headunit in my car, have replaced the rear speakers with a pair of 6x9's and a new set in the front, ive rebuilt the sub and have the front and sub running of an amp ive put in the rear pannel, hope that helps, with these things its much easier to start again rather than try to solve the fault, but good luck, and to be honest im sure they wil charge you to have a look ,

Nope bought if from Autorama near Tring.

I posted a reply to your engine problem as I'm getting the same problems. The car came with a 5 star RAC warranty so hopefully the probs with the engine are covered!!

The Chorus stereo might have had a power output for the Bose amp (in fact thinking about it, it must have) This output might not be there or might not be wired properly on your Sony.

The problem is, if your not the technical type then something very simple becomes quite an arse.

If it were me i'd take out the stereo (you can get stereo removal keys from Halfords)... it should be marked on the stereo what cables do what... you should find that the power cables (live/ground/pre-amp etc) are coming out of one plug and your speaker cables should be coming out of another. Make sure they are ALL connected. 169144-ok.gif

Thnx for the help LeMan

The rear speakers and sub didn't work on the original Audi head unit aswell so I'm assuming the amp powering them has been by-passed or blown.

You're right about being the non technical type. The last stereo I fitted was 10 years ago in a mini, my Audi's different kettle of fish!!!

But seriously the basics still remain the same. If you pulled it out, it wouldn't be as alien as you might think.

Mind you i haven't got a feckin clue where the Bose amp is on mine!

to be hoenst if you purchased the car from someone and the stereo never worked, id put the headunit back in that the car came in with and take it back to complain they should put it right ... be interested if the warrenty covers teh maf or the throttle body, if so i might buy one 169144-ok.gif

The plug that runs the power leads has the following coloured wires with a code after each which was taken off the guide on the original Audi head unit:

Green & white stripe - GA

Gray & white stripe - K

Yellow & red stripe - S

Brown - -

Red & white stripe - +

Gray & white stripe - a symbol that looks like the sun!!!

Another plug has the folloiwng leads under Line Out:

Blue & green stripe - LR

Red & green stripe - RR

2xBrown - Com

this is good, post them in the techie section and they'll know.

Blue & green stripe - LR

Red & green stripe - RR

2xBrown - Com

I think Line out is for your amp with LR being Left Rear and RR being Right Rear and the two browns being (Common)... are these all wired ok.

as a guess for the others...

Green & white stripe - GA

Gray & white stripe - K

Yellow & red stripe - S

Brown - - (Ground)

Red & white stripe - + (constant 12v Live)

Gray & white stripe - a symbol that looks like the sun!!! ( i think aerial)

I would focus on the Line out though, i'm 99% sure that is for the amp.
