[Audi A3/S3] A3 2.0 TFSI vs A3 2.0 TDI

I know its going to be quick, but am I gonna love this engine more than the one I own?

Test drive on Saturday for 3 hours alone, this should make up my mind I would hope.

What car does this compare to with power? Is it as quick as the 1.8T 180/225.

What are your opinions?

I had the 2.0 TFSI for 6 days, and I though the car was great. The engine was very gentle, but when putting the foot down, very responsive. A great engine for everyday's use.

However, the average fuel consumption was around 28 mpg, so not too great on that respect, particularly compared to the TDi, which averaged 43 mpg during my test (and similar usage).

The TDi is nowhere as gentle, refined and quiet, but still good fun to drive, particularly with a DSG gearbox...

Bottom line: if you don't mind about money and fuel consumption, and don't care about driving way above the legal speed limit, then the TFSI is a great choice.

If you do care about the running cost, then the TDi is a good choice IMHO.

Having tested both, I am going to order the TDI DSG S Line, as I want a cheap car to run, and something that can be driven within the speed limit...

I used to have an A3 1.8TQ and now I have an A3 2.0TQ. The engine is so much more refined than the old one. The power delivery is very smooth. Whereas the 1.8T gave you a kick in the back with the power the 2.0T is far more linear due the max power being available from 1800-5000 revs.

Torque is there all the time. Really pleasant engine noise and exhaust note too.

I wanted quattro and and the thought of changing gear all the time in a 2.0TDi Quattro put me off.

Fuel economy isn't great though. DIS is showing around 25mpg round town and around 29 (30 at a push) on the motorway. I think this might improve.

I've done 2000 miles in a month which means I should have gone diesel but I don't regret getting the 2.0TQ for one minute 169144-ok.gif

I think im gonna go the petrol route just due the fact of a change and a larger rev range. I wonder if the clutch will be as heavy in the 2.0 TFSI as my TDI? The 1.6 A3 I tested and the 2.0 FSI were alot lighter... Mainly the 1.6

Had my 20 tdi dsg s-line for one month now done 2500 miles dis showing 43 average. In the real world the tdi has got to be the one to go for. Fill up twice every 1000 miles at say £50.00 for the tdi or 3 times £50.00 for the petrol. Just do the maths if your doing any amount of mileage.

Cost me £360.00 to insure poss 20,000 miles between services, 43 to the gallon

CHEAP AS CHIPS!!!!!!!!!

That's odd, that's exactly the opposite of what i thought. I always found my old 1.8T very refined, linear power delivery from low down, but some what dull with it.

I found the new 2.0T had quite a bit of lag and then kicked you in the back with a thump of boost from 4krpm onwards (which i actually found more entertaining). 169144-ok.gif

I tried both and went for a half away house of the 2.0 T FSI with DSG not Quattro.

Average DIS is 32. something at the moment. Thats mixed town and motorway driving. I have got upto 37 on some journeys not being too brutal but not feathering the throttle either.

I just couldn't get on with how unrefined the 2.0 TDI was. I had a 2.5 TDI A4 at the time and that was far better but could never be described as smooth. Haven't driven an Audi TDI that is in the same league as the BMW units yet, the 3.0 might be the closest but not had a sample yet.

I buy cars with my heart not my head and the diesel didn't do anything for my heart and soul but the petrol did on this occasion.

And on the fuel cost thing.. Just did a quick calc. If you do 20,000 miles in both at 43 and 32 MPG and with current Unleaded and Diesel fuel costs it will be £450 a year more in the petrol, the choice as they say is yours.

I had the exact same dilema but it really depends on your circumstances and driving preferences.

I original said I would never own a diesel or an automatic and now I've just ordered both. Requirements change over time.

Having owned an Impreza Turbo I changed to a a Golf GT TDI 130 and was very impressed by the substantially reduced running costs and drivability. Once in gear and doing day-to-day driving, the Golf easily felt as quick as the Subaru when overtaking and I just love the huge wave of torque you get when you put your foot down. Acceleration (from a standing start), traction and handling are not in the same league but I don't need to drive like that very often and I rarely get the oppertunity given most road conditions!

I've just test driven a new Golf GTi, A3 3.2 Quattro DSG and A3 2.0TDI DSG. Although the Golf and 3.2 are very fast, smooth and beautiful built cars, I think the TDI is the better day to day proposition for me in terms of economy and useable everyday performance in most real world driving situations.

When I owned the Subaru I had a quick B-road blast to work everyday (21 Mpg!), perfect conditions for an Impreza or Golf GTi. I now comute 65 miles a day to London with mostly motorway and then crawling traffic to contend with, perfect conditions for the A3 TDI with DSG.

I take delivery in June.

I chose the petrol over the diesel as going from an Impreza Sti fro everyday driving there was just too much of a gulf in performance between that and the Tdi.

Incidentally, even the 'thirsty' TFSI engine has reduced my monthly fuel bill from around £200 a month for 720(ish) miles to around £100!

The Scoob returned these miles when driving sensibly, on one 'trackish' outing i managed 95 miles on a full tank before the fuel light came on. £45 gone just like that!!

Even the TT and R32 can be considered as economical in comparison. In fact when i use the old man's RS4 i can get about another 50 miles out of the same amount of petrol- and that's including some Scoob destroying acceleration!

I'm amased at how many people have gone from from an Impreza to a Golf TDI, I suspect it is the mid-range pull and running costs.

I didn't find the mid-range performance that different from a standard Turbo to the 130TDI, I think the TDI had the edge in gear. However, the gulf in build quality and ergonomics was very noticable.

The A3 build quality appears to be on another level again.

I actually ordered a 2.0TDi quattro S-Line but have since changed my mind and amended said order to:

2.0T FSi Quattro S-Line

Avus Silver

Armrest

Bose

However I have specified the new grill version which I think comes with the S-Line seats from the sportback, s-line badge on the front grill and the new steering wheel.

The only problem being they say that they aren't going into production until week 22 (end of May) and the soonest I should expect delivery will be the end of July....... frown.gif

Needless to say plenty of sleepless nights lay ahead... But having just returned from a pretty colourful test drive its fair to say I'm making a quantum leap in car ownership, being that I'm currently driving a Peugot 106 XRD ha ha ha ha.

I changed my mind because, like Carmad I went with the heart and not the head... fck it, you only live once.... grin.gif
