del_piero_3
Hi Guys, I am not sure if this is the right forum if not then am sorry. I have a major problem with my car, basically the central locking stopped working today. It is key operated and now it only opens the door the key is being turn to. The fuel department doesnt lock, and I cant get the boot/trunk open. If I try to open from passenager side, it sometimes opens the rear driver side door lock but others stay locked. The inside central locking button (with the key icon) doesnt work either, everytime I press it I can hear noise coming from boot. Is there anyway I can open the boot? Any ideas on how to go about fixing this problem. My car details are: P reg 1996 Audi A4 1.6 I just had the front and rear brake discs and pads changed so am not sure if this had anything to do with it. By the way my knowledge in cars is very minimal and the machanics are making a good living of me of late Thanks
Sparky
Could it be a fuse perhaps? I'm not sure if it's electrical, or pneumatic. I'm just wondering since you said the button on the inside isn't doing anything either. Not much use on these, but someone will be along in the morning to help no doubt. Welcome to TSN by the way
scooby_simon
I would agree with Sparky, Someone should be able to help in the morning. And Welcome to Tyresmoke Just to clarify, When you say : [ QUOTE ] It is key operated and now it only opens the door the key is being turn to [/ QUOTE ] It sounds like the mechanical lock is working in each door you try (both front doors) but then you say this : [ QUOTE ] If I try to open from passenager side, it sometimes opens the rear driver side door lock but others stay locked. [/ QUOTE ] In this case are you using the remote opener (i.e. on the key fob) ? If so it sounds like a fuse or electrical fault as I would assume that all the locks are not on the same circuit/fuse. UBM
Central locking pump?
del_piero_3
Sorry for any confusion. If I try turning the key on driver side it will only open driver door and not the rest. If I try to open the passenger side door it sometimes opens the rear driver side door and the others stay locked. The petrol thing doesn’t lock and the boot never opens. As for the key button inside on the driver side door (suppose to lock and open all doors when pressed), each time I press it I can hear a noise, pump hammering but doesn’t lock or open doors. The noise is from the boot on the right side of the car. I can also hear the noise when I turn the key on the driver and passenger side door. After about 10 seconds it goes off until I turn the key or press the central locking button again. In the manual the fuse box location is on end of driver side dash board. The central locking was on number 6, so I switched the number 5 with 6 (both same - 5amp) but didn’t work. Thanks
UBM
Central locking fluid or jammed pump?
del_piero_3
[ QUOTE ] Central locking pump? [/ QUOTE ] If that is the problem than I am sure the pump is located in the boot, my reasons for this is because the noise is coming from the rear driver side of the boot which I think where the pump is. But unfortunately I only have one key that is used for ignitions driver and passenger doors. It doesn’t open the boot, as this was done through central locking before. UBM
Pump could be there - the central locking pump failing is quite a common problem...
UBM
One more idea - have you tried replacing the battery in your key - or tried the other key - this might be it!!
scooby_simon
Do the seats fold down ? There should be a boot release catch somewhere in the boot IIRC.

[/ QUOTE ] I only have one key. The central locking button on the key never worked or it wasnt a option on my car - not sure. However I'll change the battery in the key and see if my luck changes... UBM
There are times when the key and the receiver for the locking in the car get out of sync. You need to press the button two or three times to get it working again...
del_piero_3
The bottom half of the rear seat does come off and I can see plenty of wires. As for the upright part of the seat I couldn’t get them to fold - I will check this again to make sure.
del_piero_3
Just in case if the new battery in the key doesnt do the trick then how much cost (inc labour) am I looking at if its the pump that needs replacing....just an estimate if possible... bearra
[ QUOTE ] Pump could be there - the central locking pump failing is quite a common problem... [/ QUOTE ] If the mechanical lock isn't activating the locking the odds are no battery or anything else will work. It is a common problem, had it twice on the 80 cab (think it was the same year as yours) both times the pneumatic control unit died from moisture damage which was behind the rear driver side seat panel so guess boot on yours. Cost about £200 to replace both times. The units aren't sealed very well against moisture, the last time I had it changed I took it out after and went over all the joins with silicon, never had the problem again. [/ QUOTE ] Wow, did you get the work done from the Audi dealer or by a local garage. I think you maybe right, I did see a small patch of wetness/water in the boot last week and strangley enough it was near where the noise is coming from....why the hell I didnt do anything about it then....arg...am not happy now. bearra
That was the part price from Audi, they were hard to find anywhere else. Then got local alarm/audio fitters to eplace it £40. May be worth taking out yourself and having a look inside, if the motherboard has only one corroded line on the circuit you may be able to bridge it with a solder repair. Units very (too) easy to open up. But like I say if you get it fixed I would take it out again and seal it thoroughly.
