Golf Mk4 1.6SE "pinking"

Hi

I've had this 2001 Golf for 4 months now, 20K on the clock, basically the problem is that at low revs, the engine seems to have a timing issue i.e. it "pinks" I have had 3 recent breakdowns which resulted in the dealer replacing the engine speed sensor. I mentioned this pinking problem but they say that nothing is wrong on the diagnostics, Am I being picky here, I don't know if this is "normal" for this engine but I woukd have thought that it was not.

Any ideas appreciated, Thanks

Could be a number of things, But i would check the lambda probe, If this is telling the engine to run weak then that can cause pinking.

They can pink slighty before the knock sensor can retard the igniton timming but it shouldn't be that bad, depends on how good your hearing is!

I had a golf same year and model and YES it pinked. I was told it was “normal” for this engine??? If you run it on Shell Optimax it will run better (may still pink). I tried five or six times to get it fixed at a dealers but no joy. Had one of the ignition coils go and called out the road side assistance, after telling the service bloke about the pinking the car ran OK until the next service!

Interestingly, the first "breakdown" was a coil faiure and the roadside guy said that one had already been replaced, he also said that there had been a duff batch and replaced the failed one and the other two (good service I thought). The other two breakdowns were, at the time a bit worrying in that whilst accelerating the "Stop" flashed in the DIS and indicated no oil pressure, the engine then cut!! after stopping, it restarted OK, both times no fault found by the Roadside assistance, Later in the day it developed an intermittent missfire, the local dealer investigated and diagnosed and replaced the engine speed sensor but looked at me pretty blankly when I mentioned the persistent pinking at low engine speeds.

I don't feel like spending out on Optimax on a 1.6 Golf, even my 3.0 Audi does not insist on that!!!
